Also known as menstrual cramps, these abdominal pains can sometimes interfere with your quality of life during the first week of your cycle.
These lower abdominal pains are caused by molecules that help the lining of the uterus to break off during menstruation known as prostaglandins. These substances cause the uterus to contract, making it easier for the lining of the uterus to detach and expel itself. Prostaglandins are therefore essential but can, when in excess, cause uterine cramps, in the same way that an overstrained muscle can cause cramps.

If necessary, you can supplement these techniques with painkillers, taking care to ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice. Avoid aspirin, which makes the blood thinner and risks intensifying your periods.
