Understanding the physiological reasons for menstruation

A woman's period marks the transition to a new cycle.

This loss of blood is quite rare in the animal kingdom. Humans only share this particularity with a few other species, including great apes, elephants and bats!

Each month, the cycle starts with menstruation, provided the previous cycle didn't result in a pregnancy. The uterus then gets rid of the mucous membrane that had developed to accommodate a fertilized egg.
This removal is characterized by bleeding that lasts between 3 and 7 days.

If fertilization does occur, however, the mucous membrane isn't eliminated: this explains why pregnant women don't menstruate.
