Oily Scalp
Definition:
A scalp suffering from excessive sebum secretion (hyperseborrhea) with a sebaceous excretion level exceeding 190 mg/cm². The hair becomes weighed down at the root, flat, dull, lacking volume, and with clumped strands. It then loses its lightness and shine. This overproduction of sebum leads to itching, caused by the hydrolysis of sebum triglycerides into irritating free fatty acids. However, if scalp hyperseborrhea is not regulated, it can eventually lead to hair loss, dandruff, and deterioration of the hair fiber (oily and weakened hair).
Internal and external causes:
Genetic factor (hyperactivity of the sebaceous gland); hormonal disorder; pollution; prolonged exposure to the sun; overly hot hair dryers and brushings; use of unsuitable and irritating hair care products; emotional stress; certain medications (antibiotics, diuretics, anticoagulants); certain diseases (Parkinson's disease, etc...); endocrine disorders.
How to reduce or eliminate:
Apply a serum based on sebum-regulating active ingredients (nettle, zinc PCA, etc...) to the scalp daily to rebalance it; choose a gentle purifying shampoo to regulate sebum production; use a weekly mask made from active ingredients with absorbent, purifying, and balancing properties (clay, rhassoul, charcoal, etc...).
Preventative steps to take:
Avoid rubbing the scalp; do not apply detangler or treatment at the roots, their use is only for the lengths; refrain from running your hands through your hair too often; limit the use of hair dryers and blowouts; rinse the hair with lukewarm water.
