HOW ARE COSMETICS REGULATED IN THE EUROPEAN UNION?
• Safe ingredients: The European Union bans over 1,300 ingredients in cosmetics that are considered dangerous or toxic. The United States rejects 11.
• No animal testing: The 2013 EU Cosmetics Regulation prohibits the use of animals to test cosmetic products and ingredients. This includes testing of finalized cosmetic products, as well as ingredients and combinations of ingredients. High-quality ingredients, innovative techniques, a cultural emphasis on grooming, and a rich historical context related to cosmetic products have made France synonymous with effective skincare formulations.
French grooming products can be traced back several centuries, starting with traditional soap-making. The industry came into prominence in the court of Louis XIV, where cosmetics, perfumes, and other beauty products became highly prized by the aristocracy.
In the 18th century, perfumery expanded with the town of Grasse in south of France becoming a major center of production for fragrances and scented goods created using traditional techniques highlighting local flowers and plants.
New innovations in the 1800s, like the creation of lipstick, further popularized the beauty industry, while French fashion designers in the pre- and post-war eras of the 20th century had a significant impact in bringing cosmetics made in France to a global audience.
Taking care of one’s skin has traditionally been prioritized more than makeup or haircare in France. This cultural point of reference has lead to unparalleled innovation in formulation and skincare techniques.Today, France is renowned for its focus on skincare research and development, and recognized for high-quality, scientifically proven products.
