Profile: Boils
Definition:
A red, sensitive, hard, and painful pimple filled with pus, which is caused by the inflammation of a hair follicle or sweat gland. After 4 to 7 days, the lump begins to soften and whiten as pus accumulates under the skin. Contagious, the boil typically disappears on its own after about 10 days. It can appear on any part of the body, but the most common places are the face, neck, armpits, shoulders, and buttocks. If numerous boils form together, it is a more serious infection and is referred to as a "carbuncle".
Internal and external causes:
A lesser-known cause; carrier of the Staphylococcus aureus bacteria on the surface of their skin; immunosuppressive diseases (HIV, diabetes, etc.).
