White wavy lines texture on a surface

Profile: Milia

Definition: Small raised skin lesions that appear as tiny white or yellowish grains, approximately 0.5 to 2 mm in diameter, relatively hard under the superficial layers of the epidermis. Also known as "fat bumps", they typically appear on the face, primarily around the eyes, around the nose, in front of the ears, and on the cheeks, but also on the neck and hands. Often mistaken for whiteheads (closed comedones), they are actually microcysts composed of an accumulation of trapped dead cells that block the pores of the epidermis. Thus, they would develop due to a poor natural exfoliation of the skin.
Internal and external causes: Genetic factors; autoimmune responses; skin trauma; excessive exposure to UV rays; overuse of so-called greasy cosmetic products; certain dermatological diseases (such as epidermolysis bullosa, etc.); long-term use of corticosteroid-based creams.
How to reduce or eliminate: In most cases, they end up disappearing spontaneously after several weeks, or even a few months; one should not attempt to pop them oneself to avoid any risk of infection or scarring; it is advisable to consult a dermatologist; dermatological procedures (mechanical extraction, cryotherapy, electrodessication, CO2 laser); dermatological prescriptions (retinoids, antibiotics).
Preventative steps to take: Using daily sun protection; avoiding overexposure to the sun; incorporating into your daily routine a skincare product containing an active ingredient that will enhance/activate cellular renewal (azelaic acid, retinoids, etc.).
