Profile: Seborrheic Psoriasis

Definition: This type of psoriasis is characterized by thick, red lesions covered with more or less abundant yellowish, greasy scales. These erythematous-squamous plaques have a seborrheic distribution, meaning they are found in areas rich in sebaceous glands. They are thus located at the edge of the scalp, on the eyebrows, behind the ears, on the wings of the nose, and in the mediosternal and interscapular regions. Although it is observed at all ages, sebopsoriasis is more common in children and adolescents and increases in patients over 50 years old. Men are more often affected than women. There appears to be a primary inflammatory dermatosis that leads to an increase in cell turnover, desquamation, and inflammation of the epidermis, as is the case with psoriasis.
Internal and external causes: Family history; immune system dysfunction.
How to reduce or eliminate: Local application of corticosteroids, calcineurin inhibitors, or vitamin D derivatives; phototherapy.
