Identity Profile: Sodium Hydroxymethylglycinate (SHMG)

INCI name: Sodium Hydroxymethylglycinate.

Function: Preservative, hair conditioner.

Origin: Synthetic.

Concentration allowed by European regulations : Up to 0.5% in rinse-off cosmetic products. Do not use if the maximum theoretical releasable formaldehyde concentration, regardless of its source, in the mixture as it is put on the market is ≥ 0.1% w/w.

Where to find it / them? : Creams, styling gels, toning lotions, setting sprays, mascaras, deodorants.

Risks to health: Potential allergen, potential skin and eye irritant, suspected carcinogen, suspected mutagen (formaldehyde releaser).
