Inulin: What Are Its Properties?

A study in vivo on human skin conducted by Thomas BOYD and his colleagues showed that the use of a tri-biotic complex (inulin, butyloctanol, lactic acid, and pyruvic acid) resulted in an increase in skin hydration, a decrease in pathogens such as Pseudomonas stutzeri and Sphingomonas anadarae, and an increase in commensals such as Streptococcus mitis and Halomonas desiderata. Additionally, H. desiderata and S. mitis were positively correlated with skin hydration, while P. stutzeri and S. anadarae were negatively correlated with metabolites promoting skin hydration.

Inulin is considered by researchers to be the primary cause of these observed positive effects. It influences the skin microbiome by rebalancing the metabolism of bacteria, which notably promotes skin hydration. Additionally, bacteria use inulin to produce carbonic acids such as lactic acid. The latter plays an essential role in regulating skin hydration. It also encourages skin renewal. Thus, inulin could reduce skin dryness and flaking through this mechanism.
