When and how often should hemp oil be used?

Hemp oil is typically derived from the cold pressing of seeds. Used pure or incorporated into a skincare formula, hemp vegetable oil has moisturizing, soothing, and antioxidant properties. Discover in this article when to use it.

Hemp oil, in brief.

The hemp seed oil used in cosmetics comes from a variety of the Cannabis Sativa species, known as "agricultural", "industrial", or "textile" hemp. This variety contains little to no THC, a psychoactive molecule, with levels less than 0.2%. Also known as hempseed, the hemp seed contains about 30% oil, which can be extracted using three different methods: mechanical (cold-pressed), via a often polluting extraction solvent such as methanol or hexane, and supercritical fluid (CO2). At Typology, the hemp oil present in thefortifying oilfor beard and hair is derived from thecold-pressed hemp seeds.

Used in gastronomy, hemp oil is also a friend to the skin and hair due to its molecular richness. It contains numerous nutrients such asfatty acids(mostly omega 6, between 45 and 65%, and omega 3, between 14 and 30%) as well as antioxidant compounds like phytosterols andvitamin E. It presents itself as a clear oily liquid, green in color and with a somewhat dry touch; it penetrates the skin well and imparts a slightly spicy and herbaceous scent.

When to resort to a hemp oil-based treatment?

Hemp oil can be used pure or incorporated into a skincare formula. It is suitable for all skin types.

However, it is primarily recommended for taking care of dry skin. Emollient, hemp oil attracts and stores water molecules at the skin cell level. It also strengthens the hydrolipidic film, which acts as a protective barrier against external aggressions and prevents dehydration.

In addition to dry skin, the mature skin also benefits from the advantages of hemp oil. The antioxidant action works against the effects of free radicals, which are responsible for the premature aging of cells.

Finally, its anti-inflammatory and sebum-regulating properties help combat acne. Thanks to its dry texture, it also has the advantage of leaving no oily residue.Non-comedogenic (comedogenicity index = 0), it does not clog pores and is an excellent ally for combination skin to oily skin.

Hemp oil is also a friend to dry hair as well as to rough beards. The supply of fatty acids and nutrients softens hair/beard strands and repairs split ends. It is also suitable for dull hair and/or hair frequently exposed to oxidation factors. Vitamin E neutralizes free radicals to prevent them from causing damage and to maintain good hair quality for as long as possible.

How and when to apply hemp oil?

Regarding its application frequency, hemp oil can be used daily to care for one's skin. Non-photosensitizing, it is generally applied morning and evening on a skin previously cleaned and dried to hydrate it and fight against aging. To enjoy its benefits, pour a few drops of oil into the palm of your hand, warm it up and spread it over the face and neck. Light circular massages help the active ingredients penetrate.

When used as a hair treatment, hemp oil should be applied before each shampoo as a care mask. To do this, spread the oil along the length and ends of your hair and let it sit for a few hours, or even overnight before rinsing. It can also be used on dry hair, without rinsing, along the lengths. For long and brittle beards, hemp oil can be applied along the lengths every other day to avoid an overly greasy effect.

Note: Hemp oil is a healthy ingredient that does not contain allergenic substances. However, it is always recommended to test it in the crook of your elbow before any use. If itching or irritation occurs, do not apply the hemp oil to your face.
