The camphor rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis camphoreiferum) is a dense, bushy perennial plant from the Lamiaceae family, native to France (Provence). It can grow up to 2 meters tall at maturity. It is also called Marine Rose, due to its preferred habitat. Indeed, etymologically, the name rosemary comes from the Latin "ros" and "marinus", meaning sea dew. In ancient Greece, rosemary was used to treat digestive disorders, and to enhance memory and concentration. In Egypt, a sprig of rosemary was found in a burial, thus proving a more religious use. In the Middle Ages, the distillation of rosemary allowed for the extraction of a fragrance.
An overview of camphor rosemary essential oil.
The camphor rosemary essential oil is extracted byhydrodistillationfrom the flowering branches of the tree, that is, by steam distillation. The principle involves heating a mixture of water and branches to evaporate the volatile molecules and collect them following condensation. This method allows obtaining two extracts, namely the hydrosol and the essential oil, with a yield of 1.5 to 3%. The rosemary essential oil appears as a clear, mobile liquid, with a color ranging from pale yellow to yellowish-green, and a fresh, rustic, more or less camphorated odor. Its composition contains ketones (about 30% camphor), monoterpenes (about 17% alpha-pinene, 9 to 20% camphene) as well as monoterpenols and sesquiterpenes.
What are the benefits of camphor rosemary essential oil?
Rosemary essential oil is valued in skincare, particularly for oily and combination skin. Indeed, it possesses astringent and purifying properties. It is also contraindicated for individuals with asthma, especially when inhaled or diffused.
Note: It is preferable to test the essential oil before using it (apply two drops in the crook of your elbow for at least 24 hours to ensure there is no reaction).
