Deodorant is essential for eliminating sweat odors. Besides its effect against bacteria, it also provides a sensation of freshness and a pleasant fragrance. Between roll-on, spray, solid, or cream formats, choosing a deodorant is not easy. Here are some insightful tips to help you see more clearly.
Spray deodorant, stick deodorant, solid deodorant... which one to choose?
Deodorant, in a nutshell.
Deodorant is a hygiene product applied daily to prevent the onset of unpleasant odors. It is applied under the armpits, areas that often remain moist throughout the day. It is important to note that the skin in this area is delicate and often damaged due to frequent hair removal/shaving. Therefore, it is more porous to treatments that can then penetrate into the body. It is thus essential to opt for a natural deodorant made with ingredients that are respectful of health.
Unlike deodorants, antiperspirants block the flow of sweat. They also prevent bad odors by limiting perspiration and eliminating bacteria. They generally containaluminum salts, an ingredient suspected to be harmful to health for several years.
Note:In everyday language, the term "deodorant" is used more frequently than "antiperspirant". Thus, we sometimes refer to deodorants with aluminum salts, when in fact, they are antiperspirants.
Which deodorant should you choose?
Solid deodorant, spray, roll-on... There are various types of deodorants available on the market. Here are their specific characteristics:
The spray or atomizer deodorant
This form of deodorant is valued for its convenience. The sprays are easy to apply and transport. In this form, the deodorant is more often an antiperspirant. It comes in the form of a fluid liquid that blocks perspiration thanks to the aluminum salts it contains. Upon application, it forms a dry powder under the armpits. Spray antiperspirants are often appreciated for the feeling of freshness they provide upon application. They are now available in mini format, to slip into a handbag or the like.
Is spray deodorant harmful to the environment? Not anymore! The chlorofluorocarbons, released into the atmosphere by the transformation of certain gases present in aerosol cans, indeed contributed to the thinning of the ozone layer. However, since the early 90s, these gases have been excluded from aerosol cans (deodorants, hair sprays...). Thanks to this global action, the hole in the ozone layer has begun to significantly recover since the 2000s. According to specialists' predictions, the upper ozone layer above the Northern Hemisphere could be fully restored by 2030 while the gaping hole above Antarctica should disappear by the 2060s!
The deodorant in cream form
If you dislike the moisture provided by a roll-on deodorant, consider opting for creams.New to the market, deodorant creams are recommended for sensitive skin as they often contain ingredients to hydrate and nourish the skin. They are also generally formulated without alcohol.
The roll-on deodorant, with a ball applicator
Once applied, the roll-on deodorant helps combat the formation of bacteria responsible for bad odors. Moreover, it often does not leave marks on clothing, unlike sprays.
The stick deodorant
stick deodorant, the stick is the solid format of deodorant/antiperspirant. It often contains nourishing ingredients such as butters and provides a pleasant and rich texture.
Thus, everything depends on the sensitivity of the skin and the sensations of each individual. In any case, if you have sensitive skin, be sure to use an alcohol-free deodorant, regardless of its format. Next, if you prefer a product that dries quickly, opt for a spray or stick. However, if your preference is for a product that does not leave white marks, you should lean towards a solid stick.
What about alum stone?Alum stone is not as natural as its name suggests. In fact, it can sometimes be a 100% synthetic stone, made from Ammonium Alum or synthetic Ammonium Sulfate, a byproduct of the nylon chemical industry. In any case, whether natural or synthetic, alum stone contains aluminum salts, which we advise you to avoid as a precautionary principle.
