Profile: Chalazion

Definition: A small, hard, red swelling that is initially painful to the touch on the upper eyelid and occasionally on the lower eyelid. Most chalazia disappear within a month or less.
Internal and external causes: Blockage of a Meibomian gland that helps to keep the eyes moist.
How to reduce or eliminate: Never attempt to burst a chalazion; instead, apply a warm compress to the affected eye for 15 minutes; gently massage the eyelid several times a day to help unblock the gland; consult an ophthalmologist; drainage of the fluid through a small incision (under medical supervision); use of eye drops; steroid injections.
Preventative steps to take: Thoroughly and frequently wash your hands before touching your eyes; properly maintain contact lenses with a disinfectant and cleaning solution for lenses; wash and remove makeup from your face daily; replace makeup every two to three months.
