Identity Profile: Calluses

Definition: A thick, rough, shallow, hard, and yellowish mass of the epidermis that most often appears under the foot, particularly at the heel or under the toe, although they can develop on any part of the body that is subjected to regular friction (fingertips, palms, etc.). This hardening of the skin corresponds to a defense mechanism of the affected area with an increased production of keratin.
Internal and external causes: Repeated pressure or friction applied to the skin.
How to reduce or eliminate: Consult a physician; gently sand the area after softening it (either by running it under water or applying a moisturizing cream); apply keratolytic or corn-removing medications in the form of an ointment or paste (salicylic acid).
Preventative steps to take: Wearing soft and wide shoes; putting on socks; using protective insole inserts; utilizing padded gloves.
