Identity Profile: Hematomas (Bruises)

Definition: A dark blue or black mark, typically harmless, accompanied by swelling, discoloration, pain, and warmth. This is due to a leakage and accumulation of blood under the skin following the rupture of blood vessel walls. There are different types of hematomas depending on the specific part of the body where it forms: septal hematoma, auricular hematoma, intracranial hematoma, abdominal hematoma, subcutaneous hematoma, subungual hematoma, and intramuscular hematoma.
Internal and external causes: Severe impact in the affected area, cranial trauma.
How to reduce or eliminate: Apply an ice pack wrapped in a towel for 15 minutes several times a day; take pain relievers to alleviate pain and swelling (avoid aspirin); perform surgical drainage; carry out a craniotomy (intracranial hematoma).
Preventative steps to take: Exercise caution while engaging in an activity; avoid falls.
