Profile: Split Nails
Definition:
A nail characterized by a change in nail texture and the formation of a vertical crack along the nail tip, splitting it in two, as a result of tension exerted on the nail.
Internal and external causes:
Long-term exposure to moisture, nail biting, fungal or bacterial infections, certain diseases (such as psoriasis), and nutritional deficiencies (zinc, biotin, iron).
How to reduce or eliminate:
Trimming the nail slit that extends beyond the nail bed; application of a self-adhesive silk film; use of a lotion containing alpha-hydroxy acid or lanolin; prescription of an antifungal medication; intake of dietary supplements.
Preventative steps to take:
Wear protective gloves during household chores; avoid biting or tearing your nails; apply a moisturizing treatment to your nails and cuticles; use nail hardening products.
