Profile: Psoriasis of the Mucous Membranes

Definition:   A relatively rare form of psoriasis that affects the mucous membranes, namely the tongue, lips, inside of the cheeks, and genital areas (glans and vulva). In the case of oral psoriasis, it manifests as slightly thickened, whitish areas. In the case of genital psoriasis, well-defined, non-scaling red patches are observed, which may be associated with itching, burning sensations, and pain during sexual intercourse.

Internal and external causes:   Genetic predisposition; fungal infection (candidiasis); leukoplakia.

How to reduce or eliminate them:   Topical application of potent class 3 dermocorticoids (methylprednisolone acetate, halometasone, etc.) on genital lesions; prescription of drug treatments based on biological ingredients (oral corticosteroids, cyclosporine, methotrexate, acitretin, and apremilast).
