Originally from Asia, mandarin owes its name to its color reminiscent of the silk robes of the mandarins, the high officials of the Chinese Empire. During the HAN dynasty, this citrus fruit had a high status. A government official was specially in charge of managing the affairs related to the mandarin. The mandarin tree arrived in Europe, and particularly in the Provence, only around 1800. This was 400 years after the orange. Its consumption is very common today. In cosmetics, this essential oil is known for its relaxing and soothing virtues, and brings a subtle fresh scent to formulas. Contrary to what we might think, there are no different varieties of mandarins. All mandarins come from the Citrus reticulata Blanco. Everything depends on the degree of ripeness of the fruit when the essence is extracted and therefore on the harvest time. Indeed, during autumn, the mandarin is rich in chlorophyll, its peel is then green. As winter approaches, the chlorophyll gradually disappears and the mandarin takes on an orange color, passing through yellow.
