How is witch hazel produced?

Hydrosol is a treatment obtained by distilling a part of the plant with steam. In the case of witch hazel hydrosol, it's the leaves that are distilled to extract all the properties of the plant. Less concentrated in active ingredients, hydrosol is suitable for pregnant women.

To produce hydrosol, leaves are placed above boiling water in a sealed container. The resulting steam passes through a pipe that is immersed in cold water to induce condensation. The steam then transforms into water droplets that are collected in a bottle, this is the hydrosol. This hydrosol retains all the properties of the witch hazel and can be used for skincare.

Witch hazel hydrosol possesses astringent, antioxidant, and soothing properties. For oily skin, its purifying virtues deeply cleanse the skin and eliminate the excess sebum that causes a shiny appearance and comedones. It is also recommended for skin prone to irritation and redness due to its soothing properties. It alleviates discomfort associated with irritations while reducing redness. Moreover, witch hazel hydrosol tightens pores, which are typically enlarged in oily skin. The complexion then becomes even, and the skin regains its tonicity. Applying a cotton pad soaked in witch hazel hydrosol under the eyes can also help reduce dark circles.
