How To Obtain Peony Cell Extract?

Peony, valued for its sebum-regulating and mattifying properties in skin care, is a perennial plant that comes in several varieties. We use it in the form of a cell extract, the manufacturing process of which is described here.

Procedure for Obtaining Peony Cells

Peony cells are whole cells taken locally from the plant. They are obtained using an environmentally friendly biotechnological process that respects biodiversity. This procedure includes several steps:

  1. Plant selection and sampling: taking a piece of the plant (leaves);

  2. In vitro culture of the extracted part of the plant: successive planting on a new nutrient medium composed of water, minerals, sugars and vitamins;

  3. Elicitation: stimulation of the cell culture by UV and visible light to produce metabolites (active molecules);

  4. Rinsing: removal of all traces of the culture medium;

  5. Filtration of cells;

  6. Sonication of the cells and dispersion of the extract in sunflower oil.

This type of extraction preserves all the active molecules present in the plant cells, which gives this compound a complementary action to other plant extracts (vegetable oils, essential oils and hydrolates).

The Benefits of Peony Cells for the Skin

These plant compounds are mainly recommended for regulating sebum secretion and mattifying oily skin. They act on a key enzyme of the epidermis to limit sebum overproduction, 5-alpha reductase. This enzyme is responsible for the activity of testosterone, a hormone mainly involved in sebum production. For this reason, the cell extract of peony is included in our purifying botanical assembly. This night serum helps purify the skin thanks to the sebum-regulating and anti-inflammatory effects of seven botanical extracts. Please note that it is unsuitable for pregnant and breastfeeding women due to the essential oils it contains.

A Few Words About Peony

Peony (Paeonia officinalis) is a herbaceous perennial plant of the peony family, native to Central and Eastern Asia, with a root bulb. It blooms in spring and is relatively easy to cultivate. It likes deep, nutrient-rich, humus-rich, well-drained soil. Therefore, it is often found in the wild in forests and meadows.

In China, the flower with its many subspecies has been very famous for centuries and is used for great events: Flower shows and exhibitions are held all over the country at flowering time. It was introduced to Europe at the end of the 18th century and has become a popular ornamental plant due to its numerous cultivars.
