The oral intake of rose geranium essential oil can provide significant skin benefits. In a study conducted by Maamar MEKARNIA and his colleagues, the team wanted to verify the anti-inflammatory activity of rose geranium essential oil, orally administered to mice, on edema. 0.5 mL of oil per mouse was given, at three different concentrations (100, 200, or 400 mg/kg). At doses of 100, 200, and 400 mg/kg, the oral administration of the oil resulted in a reduction of 30, 38, and 73% of paw edema, respectively.

This evidence may suggest that the anti-inflammatory actions observed are related to the inhibition of one or more intracellular signaling pathways involved in the effects of several inflammatory mediators. Certain plant constituents of rose geranium essential oil, particularly terpenoid alcohols (geraniol and citronellol), have been reported as being useful in managing inflammatory processes.

How to use it?

It is recommended to dilute one to two drops in 250 g of food (meals or beverages), to be taken at most once a day.

The topical application of rose geranium essential oil.

When applied topically, the geranium rose essential oil also exhibits intriguing properties. It possesses antibacterial properties, particularly against the Streptococcus sp, known to cause skin infections such as impetigo. It is also capable of inhibiting the growth of fungi, especially dermatophytes, which are responsible for fungal infections like athlete's foot. It can reduce skin inflammation and can also act as an antioxidant, which proves beneficial in slowing down skin aging. Lastly, it improves wound healing.

How to use it?

Essential oils generally need to be diluted in a neutral carrier oil such as sweet almond oil, olive oil, or jojoba oil. We recommend diluting two to three drops of essential oil in a tablespoon of carrier oil (1 to 3%). Then apply the mixture to the desired area and massage in circular motions until fully absorbed. Avoid sensitive areas, such as around the eyes and open wounds. Once the application is complete, tightly seal the bottle containing the diluted essential oil solution and store it in a cool place, away from direct sunlight.

The essential oil of rose geranium is also found in cosmetic products: creams, facial masks, exfoliants...

The essential oil of rose geranium on hair.

No study has proven a specific effect of therose geranium essential oil when applied to hair. However, assumptions can be made based on the previously stated properties of the oil. Indeed, we have mentioned the anti-inflammatory properties of rose geranium essential oil. These could potentially reduce the irritation associated with a scalp inflammation.

Furthermore, the aforementioned antioxidant capacity can also be interesting in this regard. It has been demonstrated that sun-induced oxidation of the hair leads to a decrease in the vitality of the hair fibers. The photochemical protection of hair proteins is provided by pigments that absorb and filter radiation, then dissipate this energy as heat.

However, through this protection, the pigments themselves can be damaged and cause the onset of gray hair. Therefore, applying rose geranium essential oil to the hair could restore the quality of the hair fibers and reduce the risk of hair graying. Let's remember that these possible effects have not been scientifically proven.

How to use it?

You can dilute three to four drops of essential oil in a tablespoon of vegetable oil. Choose one that suits your concern (castor oil, jojoba oil, argan oil). For an oil bath, apply the mixture to the scalp and massage in circular motions, then apply it to the lengths, focusing on the ends, let it sit for a few minutes then wash your hair with a shampoo. It is also possible to find them in shampoos and conditioners targeted against irritations, in order to soothe and purify the scalp.

Before using an essential oil, it is always recommended to perform a skin test, by applying a few drops of the oil to the inside of the elbow or behind the ears, and waiting 24 hours to observe any potential reactions.
