Mistakes to avoid after laser or intense pulsed light hair removal.

Mistakes to avoid after laser or intense pulsed light hair removal.

Do you dream of doing away with razors and hair removal creams, or no longer needing to keep your appointments with the beautician for a waxing session? Long-lasting hair removal techniques, such as Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) and laser hair removal, allow you to enjoy smooth, hair-free skin for an extended period. However, before you get started, you need to be aware of the mistakes to avoid after a session to achieve the desired effect.

Mistake No. 1: Exposing oneself to the sun.

Exposure to the sun increases the level of melanin on the skin's surface. This color change can impact the outcome of permanent hair removal. Why? Because these techniques work by targeting the hair's melanin. The greater the contrast between the skin and hair pigments, meaning lighter skin and darker hair, the more satisfactory the results. Furthermore, following a permanent hair removal session, the skin becomes more sensitive, which increases the risk of sunburn upon exposure to the sun.

Mistake No. 2: Skipping a session.

Hair growth occurs asynchronously. Some hairs are in the growth phase while others are in the resting or shedding phase, and therefore are not removed during the treatment session. This is why it is important to be diligent in adhering to the scheduled treatment sessions, which are planned with the aim of removing as many hairs as possible in the growth phase. Skipping a session could lead to increased hair regrowth after treatment, which can impact the success of the treatment.

Mistake No. 3: Following thermal treatments.

It is recommended to refrain from heat treatments, such as spas, steam rooms, and saunas, for a period of 7 days following the procedure. Additionally, it is important to avoid hot baths and showers after the sessions. The skin is particularly sensitive and may pose risks of irritation.

Mistake No. 4: Swimming in the sea or the pool.

It is advised not to swim in the sea or pool for 48 hours following a hair removal session. Indeed, chlorine can be harsh on the skin and lead to reactions, such as patches, redness, or itching. Similarly, the salt present in seawater can cause skin irritation.

Mistake No.5: Shaving.

It is recommended to refrain from shaving for 72 hours following the treatment. Even though it does not directly impact the effectiveness of the hair removal, shaving during this period can lead to skin irritations and inflammations, as the skin is more sensitive after the laser treatment.

Mistake No. 6: Exercising.

It is advisable not to exercise for at least 48 hours following a laser hair removal session. The heat from the laser remains stored in the skin for several hours. Therefore, it may be normal to notice redness and skin irritations around the treated area. However, it is important to note that skin inflammation can worsen if this area is exposed to moisture and friction immediately after laser hair removal. Sweat, in particular, can introduce microbes, which increases the risk of infection when the skin is weakened.

Mistake No. 7: Applying Makeup.

It is recommended to wait 72 hours before applying makeup. After a session, the skin remains highly sensitive and requires time to fully recover. The use of makeup products can cause skin irritations or clog the pores, which can lead to infections.
