Organic/chemical filters

Organic filters, often called chemical filters, are molecules used in sunscreen products to absorb ultraviolet radiation. After absorption, the UV energy is converted into a less harmful form of energy, generally heat. In this way, they help reduce the effects of solar radiation on the skin.
FAQ about organic/chemical filters

How does an organic sunscreen filter work?

An organic UV filter is a molecule capable of absorbing ultraviolet radiation. After absorption, the energy is converted into heat, which helps reduce the impact of UV on the skin.

Are chemical filters dangerous for the skin?

Not all chemical filters have a bad reputation. Diethylhexyl butamido triazone, or iscotrizinol, as well as phenylbenzimidazole sulfonic acid, or ensulizole, are completely safe for the skin.

Do organic filters protect against UVA and UVB rays?

Some filters primarily target UVB, while others absorb more UVA. Cosmetic products often combine several filters in order to provide broad-spectrum protection.

Do chemical filters penetrate the skin?

Certain filters can partially penetrate the stratum corneum. However, their systemic absorption remains low at the concentrations used in cosmetics.

Are chemical filters photostable?

Photostability varies depending on the molecule. Certain chemical filters can in fact degrade under UV exposure, such as avobenzone.

Can chemical filters be used on sensitive skin?

Certain sensitive skin types may react to organic filters. In such cases, formulations using mineral filters may be more appropriate.

Are chemical filters effective against skin aging?

By protecting the skin against the sun’s rays, chemical sunscreen filters help to limit the effects of photoaging. Regular sun protection is a key component in preventing sun-related damage.

Are chemical filters suitable for children?

In general, it is preferable to use mineral sunscreens to protect children. That said, it is essential to remember that children should not be exposed to the sun.

Are organic filters stable in water?

It depends on the organic filters and the formulation. If you plan to go swimming, choose water-resistant (“waterproof”) products, and remember to reapply your sunscreen after each swim.

Do chemical filters leave a visible film on the skin?

Unlike certain mineral filters, organic filters are generally invisible on the skin, regardless of the phototype.
