Nodules

A nodule is a deeply inflamed and painful type of acne lesion located in the dermis, whereas a pustule is more superficial and less painful, although it remains an inflammatory lesion.

Whether they occur in an acne-prone context or not, nodules are deeply embedded skin lesions that require evaluation by a dermatologist. This also ensures they are not cancerous.

To relieve nodule pain, you can apply cold compresses to reduce inflammation and avoid handling the pimples. Additionally, try to see a dermatologist as soon as possible to receive appropriate treatment.

The nodules can occur in adulthood, often due to hormonal factors and stress, but nodular acne is more common during adolescence.

Nodules can become infected if they are manipulated or following bacterial proliferation in the skin, which can aggravate inflammation and increase the risk of scarring.

Nodules and cysts are two masses that resemble each other but differ in composition. The former consist of solid tissue, whereas the latter are fluid-filled.

Some inflammatory nodules may regress over time. Others persist or enlarge. Their progression depends on their origin.

It is inadvisable to manipulate a nodule, particularly if it is deep. This can exacerbate inflammation or promote infection. Dermatological evaluation and management are preferable.

Although the majority of nodules are benign, some nodules may correspond to malignant lesions. Rapid growth, a change in color, or bleeding should raise concern. A medical consultation is then recommended.
