The side effects of the fractional thulium laser are generally mild and transient, since it is a nonablative laser that operates at intermediate depth in the dermis, but they may vary based on factors such as skin phototype, individual sensitivity, and treatment intensity.
Common side effects of the thulium laser include mild, transient reactions such as erythema, redness, lasting 24 to 72 hours, a warmth or mild burning sensation after treatment, moderate swelling around the eyes and a desquamation fine peeling after 2 to 4 days. The skin may also feel tightness or temporary dryness. Other, less common side effects may occur, such as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation seen in darker skin types or with early sun exposure, localized hypopigmentation, crusts or transient micro-craters with high settings.
In a study of 71 patients (mean age of 56 years) who underwent a single thulium laser session, it was observed that more than 50% of patients experienced tugging, swelling, sensitivity, discomfort, and a burning sensation early in the recovery period, which subsided quickly over time.
