Hormones qui influent sur la peau.

What are the hormones that influence the skin?

Before, during, and after pregnancy, hormones play a significant role in the condition of our skin. This begins from puberty and continues until menopause. The quality and quantity of hormones change throughout our lives, impacting our skin. Let's explore the different hormones that influence our skin.

1. Estrogen and Progesterone.

Produced by the ovaries, these two hormones complement each other and affect the hydration of our skin. Estrogens influence the development of the breasts, ovulation, the onset of menstruation, and pubic hair growth. Progesterone, on the other hand, controls the menstrual cycle. Also known as sex hormones, they influence the appearance of our skin throughout our lives. The hormonal upheavals we encounter cause changes in the skin.

Progesterone regulates sebum production, while estrogen promotes the synthesis of collagen, hyaluronic acid, and elastin. These hormones primarily affect the skin of the face, thus impacting it significantly.

2. Cortisol.

When present in excessive amounts in the body, cortisol can cause acne, eczema, psoriasis, and a dull complexion. This hormone is secreted by the adrenal glands during periods of stress. A state of repeated stress can result in premature aging of the skin. On the contrary, positive emotions help to lower the level of skin inflammation.

3. Insulin.

Secreted by the pancreas following sugar consumption, it can trigger an overproduction of sebum, making the dermis thick. With an overproduction of insulin, the skin then becomes oily and dull. An excess of sebum on the face leads to the appearance of pimples. Thus, excessive consumption of sugar and milk can have an effect on hormones that will act on our skin.

4. Melatonin.

This hormone is secreted by the pineal gland located in the brain. It is responsible for regulating sleep. A lack of sleep can dull the complexion and dry out the skin. It is the lack of sleep that disrupts the functions of this hormone. Skin regeneration occurs at night, therefore, not getting enough sleep can lead to accelerated skin aging.

Almost constant exposure to the blue light from computers or smartphones can harm the quality of our sleep. This disrupts the secretion of melatonin.

5. Androgen Hormones.

This refers to a hormone that can influence the condition of our skin. Dehydroepiandrosterone is also considered the hormone of youth. It reaches its peak production at 25 years old and slowly decreases with age. A decline in DHEA production results in dehydration, a loss of firmness, and premature aging of the skin. It contributes to the care of our skin.
