Cotton, in a nutshell.
Cotton is the plant fiber that encloses the seeds of the cotton plant, a shrub belonging to the Malvaceae family. This fiber is composed of cellulose, which is subsequently transformed into thread to manufacture fabric. The cotton plant is a shrub primarily cultivated in arid tropical and/or subtropical regions. It can reach a height of 10 meters if its exposure to the sun is optimal.
There are several species and varieties of cotton:
TheGossypium arboreumand theGossypium herbaceum, are the most common species with short fibers used in cosmetics;
TheGossypium barbadense, a variety originally from Peru but introduced in Egypt and cultivated worldwide. It is valued for the length and quality of its fibers;
TheGossypium hirsutumwhich traces its origins back to South America.
In cosmetics, cotton is used in three main forms:vegetable oil (Gossypium Herbaceum Seed Oil), thecellular extract or native plant cells (Gossypium Arboreum Leaf Cell Extract), and the plant extract (Gossypium Herbaceum (Cotton) Seed Extract) which is the subject of this article.
What is plant-derived cotton extract?
The extract of the seed of the cotton plant is obtained by soaking the seeds in water and glycerin followed by a microwave extraction, a filtration, an adjustment of the pH with a solution of potassium sorbate (potassium salt of sorbic acid) and finally a filtration.
Of a deep yellow color, cottonseed extract is a nutrient-rich ingredient, primarily abundant in fatty acids and flavonoids. It also contains glycosides, steroids, saponins, resins, carbohydrates, proteins, and phenolic compounds, as well as tannins. This plant-based ingredient is water-soluble, or soluble in water.
Suitable for all skin types, the plant extract of cotton is primarily recognized for its softening, soothing, supple-making, and regenerative properties.
What are the cosmetic properties of "Gossypium Herbaceum Seed Extract"?
The extract from cottonseed is as beneficial for the skin as it is for the hair.
It penetrates and acts quickly in the epidermal tissue due to its high concentration of omega-6. It draws water into the epidermal tissue and strengthens the hydrolipidic barrier to prevent dehydration. As a result, the skin becomes softer, more toned, and regains its radiance. By reinforcing the hydrolipidic film, it compensates for the function of ceramides. Ceramides are lipids secreted by the body, whose role is to protect the epidermal tissue against toxins. Under the effects of aging and sun exposure, their function diminishes, thus requiring external supplementation.
By combating inflammation, cottonseed extract restructures the skin and scalp, soothing itchiness and irritation. Furthermore, it regulates the production of sebum, thereby inhibiting the proliferation of dandruff on the scalp. It also acts as a hair conditioner, helping to manage hair.
Where can one find "Gossypium Herbaceum Seed Extract" in skincare products?
Thanks to its numerous properties, "Gossypium Herbaceum Seed Extract" is present in approximately 0.12% of skin and hair care products. It is used in certain moisturizing and cleansing treatments such as moisturizing cream, wipes, shower gels, and shampoos. Its protective properties for the scalp mean that it is found in certain hair formulas such as shampoos or even scalp serums.
We have developed a scalp treatment soothing with bisabolol andcotton extract. It has been formulated to hydrate and soothe scalp discomfort. In the form of an emulsion, this care penetrates without leaving a greasy film. It is applied to the dry scalp and does not require rinsing. This serum is recommended for sensitive and irritated scalps. It is also suitable for people prone to dry dandruff.
