Cotton, in brief.

Cotton is the plant fiber that encases the seeds of the cotton plant, a shrub in the Malvaceae family. This fiber consists of cellulose, which is spun into thread to make fabric. The cotton plant is a shrub cultivated in arid tropical and subtropical regions. It can reach ten meters in height when exposed to optimal sunlight.

There are several species and varieties of cotton:

  • The Gossypium arboreum and the Gossypium herbaceum, the most common short-fiber species used in skin care;

  • The Gossypium barbadense is a variety native to Peru, introduced to Egypt, and cultivated worldwide. It is valued for its fiber length and quality;

  • TheGossypium hirsutumoriginates in South America.

In skincare, cotton is used in three main forms:plant oil (Gossypium Herbaceum Seed Oil),cellular extract or native plant cells (Gossypium Arboreum Leaf Cell Extract), and botanical extract (Gossypium Herbaceum (Cotton) Seed Extract), which this article covers.

What is cotton plant extract?

Seed extract from cotton is obtained by maceration of the seeds in water and glycerin followed by a microwave extraction, a filtration, a pH adjustment with a potassium sorbate solution (potassium salt of sorbic acid) and a final filtration.

Dark yellow in color, cottonseed extract is a source of active compounds, with fatty acids and flavonoids as its main constituents. It also contains glycosides, steroids, saponins, resins, carbohydrates, proteins, phenolic compounds, and tannins. This plant-based ingredient is water-soluble.

Suitable for all skin types, cotton plant extract is known for its softening, soothing, smoothing, and regenerating properties.

What are the cosmetic properties of "Gossypium Herbaceum Seed Extract"?

Cottonseed extract is as beneficial for skin as it is for hair.

Its high omega-6 concentration ensures rapid action within the epidermis. It draws water into the epidermis and strengthens the hydrolipidic barrier to prevent dehydration. Skin gains smoothness, firmness, and brightness. By reinforcing the hydrolipidic barrier, it compensates for ceramide function. Ceramides are lipids secreted by the body to protect the epidermis from toxins. Age and sun exposure reduce their function, requiring an external supply.

By targeting inflammation, cottonseed extract restructures skin and scalp and soothes itching and irritation. It regulates sebum, inhibiting dandruff growth on the scalp. It acts as a hair conditioner to help tame hair.

Which skincare products contain Gossypium Herbaceum Seed Extract?

Thanks to its multiple properties, "Gossypium Herbaceum Seed Extract" is present in about 0.12% of skin and hair care products. It is used in hydrating and cleansing products such as moisturizing creams, wipes, shower gels, and shampoos. Its scalp-protective properties mean it is found in certain hair-care formulations such as shampoos or scalp serums.

We developed a soothing scalp treatment with bisabolol andcotton extract. It hydrates and relieves scalp discomfort. As an emulsion, this formula absorbs without leaving an oily film. Apply to dry scalp. No rinsing required. This serum is suitable for sensitive or irritated scalps. It is also suitable for those prone to dry dandruff.
