Comedogenic: what does this term mean?

Comedogenicity relies on an ingredient's ability to block pores, forming a film on the skin that prevents sebum from escaping. Released sebum accumulates on the surface, promoting the formation of blemishes on the skin, manifesting as comedones that may appear as blackheads or whiteheads. In individuals with acne, applying comedogenic substances may worsen this condition.

Evaluation of an ingredient's comedogenicity can be done by measuring its comedogenicity index, ranging from 0 to 5, to determine its occlusive potential. On this scale, a score of 0 means there is no pore occlusion and no comedone formation. A score of 5 means there is a high probability that the pores will become blocked and comedones form following the ingredient's application. The comedogenicity index is based on three criteria: the ingredient's ability to penetrate the skin's superficial layers, its freshness, which depends on storage, and its sensitivity to oxidation. An ingredient is considered comedogenic at a score of 2.

It is important to note that an ingredient’s comedogenicity does not guarantee the appearance of skin blemishes. It depends on the individual and their skin type. Reactions to comedogenic products vary from person to person.

Is baobab oil comedogenic?

Regarding baobab oil, to date, there are few specific scientific studies on its comedogenicity. The existing data suggest that the comedogenicity of baobab oil is low, or negligible. Baobab oil is considered non-comedogenic. This assessment aligns with comedogenicity index criteria.

First, the composition of baobab oil, rich in unsaturated fatty acids (especially linoleic acid), allows the oil, through its emollient properties, to penetrate into the skin’s outer layers to deliver hydration. Studies on'baobab oil suggest that its high polyunsaturated fatty acid content makes it less comedogenic than some oils richer in monounsaturated fatty acids, such as coconut oil. It appears that plant oils high in polyunsaturated fatty acids, like linoleic acid, are less comedogenic than those high in monounsaturated fatty acids, like oleic acid.

Baobab oil has a high absorption capacity and a high oxidative stability, with a oxidative potential relatively low. This makes it slow to oxidize on contact with oxygen. It remains stable at high temperatures, which helps preserve its freshness.

Finally, there are certain usage precautions to consider for optimal use and potential: store it away from heat and light; keep it out of reach of children.
