What is gluconolactone?
Being part of the poly-hydroxy acids (P.H.A), the gluconolactone is an organic acid used as a cosmetic active ingredient, but also in food as an additive. Gluconolactone, also known as glucono-delta-lactone, is naturally found in nature and in certain foods like honey.
Gluconolactone presents itself as a crystalline white powder that is odorless. It transforms into gluconic acid when it comes into contact with the moisture of the skin. Its application results in a keratolytic effect, meaning it eliminates dead cells on the skin's surface by disrupting the cohesion between corneocytes.
This active ingredient is also interesting due to its moisturizing properties, which allow it to strengthen the hydrolipidic barrier. This is possible due to the presence of numerous hydroxyl functions (OH) in the chemical structure of gluconolactone. These hydroxyl functions establish hydrogen bonds with water, which reduces transepidermal water loss.
It also possesses antioxidant properties that protect the skin from external aggressions and fight against free radicals, which are responsible for signs of aging.
Compared to alpha-hydroxy acids (A.H.A), polyhydroxy acids (P.H.A.) are gentler. Indeed, they have a higher molecular weight and therefore penetrate less deeply into the skin. As a result, they are well tolerated by sensitive skin.
What is Glucuronolactone?
Glucuronolactone, or gamma-glucuronic acid lactone, is a sugar naturally found in the body. It can be of plant origin or obtained by oxidizing starch from nitric acid. This ingredient is primarily incorporated into energy drinks. Its effect is similar to that of caffeine, helping to combat fatigue and promote a sense of well-being.
Gluconolactone in our skincare products.
At Typology, we have various products based on gluconolactone :
The peeling mask unclogs pores, renews the skin, and evens out the complexion. Composed of an exfoliating complex based on A.H.A. and P.H.A., it eliminates dead skin cells and refines the skin's texture. Applied once or twice a week, it also helps to reduce the presence of blackheads over time. However, due to its high concentration of A.H.A., its application is not recommended for sensitive skin.
The anti-mark serum :
Thanks to gluconolactone, which promotes the removal of dead skin cells, this serum reduces the appearance of post-acne hyperpigmented marks (in conjunction with licorice extract which decreases melanin production) and hypertrophic scars. Due to its moisturizing properties, it helps the skin maintain its hydration and thus reduces the risk of skin dryness. This serum also contains Centella asiatica, which is a powerful healing, soothing, and anti-inflammatory active ingredient. This serum is used topically, preferably in the evening.
The exfoliating cleansing gel :
This is a cleansing treatment designed to remove impurities, excess sebum, and pollution residues accumulated on the epidermis. The gluconolactone contained in the treatment micro-exfoliates the skin and unclogs the pores. It also promotes the skin's natural hydration. The presence of the aloe vera gel helps to hydrate, repair, and soothe the skin. The sweet orange essential oil it contains has antibacterial properties that are ideal for combating pimples.
The scalp exfoliant:
It provides a dual exfoliation of the scalp: chemical with gluconolactone, and mechanical with jojoba beads and silica powder. The scalp is healthy, rebalanced, and free of dead cells. The mechanical exfoliation action combined with thepeppermint essential oil helps to accelerate hair growth by stimulating microcirculation. Additionally, theeucalyptus globulus essential oil it contains soothes scalp irritations and limits the appearance of dandruff. Finally, gluconolactone and aloe vera stimulate the scalp's natural hydration. This scrub is to be usedonce to twice a week on a dry scalp. Despite the presence of essential oils, this product can be used by pregnant and breastfeeding women.
