Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation Marks
Definition:
Flat brown to black spots, depending on skin color, that occur as a result of an injury or inflammation. This post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is due to an overproduction of melanin. Indeed, during inflammation, pro-inflammatory cytokines stimulate the activity of melanocytes. This type of markings is more frequent in mixed to darker skin types.
Internal and external causes:
Acne, atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, aesthetic treatments (dermabrasion, chemical peeling and laser treatment), injury.
How to reduce or eliminate:
Use treatments containing the following active ingredients: azelaic acid, arbutin acid, niacinamide, vitamin C, chemical exfoliants (AHA, BHA and PHA), retinoids; chemical peels; laser treatment; hydroquinone prescription;
Preventative steps to take:
Apply a sun protection product daily; limit the time spent in the sun; do not expose yourself to the sun during the most intense hours; wear protective clothing and sun hats as much as possible; do not scratch, squeeze or touch pimples; moisturize your skin daily for optimal healing
