Definition:
Flat brown to black spots, depending on skin color, that occur as a result of an injury or inflammation. This post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is due to an overproduction of melanin. Indeed, during inflammation, pro-inflammatory cytokines stimulate the activity of melanocytes. This type of markings is more frequent in mixed to darker skin types.
