Eyebrows that no longer grow back: what causes this, and how can they be made denser?

Eyebrows play an essential role in facial expression and in the overall balance of facial features. However, they can sometimes become sparse or stop growing back properly. Several factors can explain this phenomenon. Why do eyebrows stop growing back, and how can you increase their density? Discover the possible causes and the solutions to restore fuller eyebrows.

How can we explain why some eyebrows stop growing back?

The eyebrows , like the hair on the scalp, follow a hair cycle made up of several successive phases: the anagen phase, or growth phase, the catagen phase, or transition phase, and the telogen phase, or resting phase. However, this cycle is shorter than that of the scalp. The growth phase of the eyebrows usually lasts only a few weeks, compared with several years for scalp hair. This specific feature explains why eyebrows remain relatively short and do not grow like scalp hair. It is also the reason why eyebrow regrowth may appear slow and sometimes irregular after waxing or hair loss.

Contrary to some popular beliefs, in most cases eyebrows do grow back after waxing or plucking, because pulling out a hair does not systematically destroy the hair follicle. To permanently prevent regrowth, it would be necessary to damage not only the hair bulb, but also certain deeper structures of the follicle, in particular the area called the follicular isthmus and the associated sebaceous glands. However, repeated hair removal over a long period of time can gradually weaken the follicles and lead to regrowth that is more thin and sparse.

Certain situations can also lead to more extensive destruction of the hair follicles, thereby preventing the natural regrowth of the eyebrows. This is the case for certain forms of scarring alopecia, such as frontal fibrosing alopecia, an inflammatory disease that causes the progressive destruction of the follicles. Even when eyebrow transplants are performed in these situations, the transplanted hairs may sometimes be lost after a few years if the disease continues to progress.

Skin injuries or certain dermatological diseases can also lead to permanent eyebrow loss. Scars resulting from an injury, a burn, or an infection can destroy the hair follicles in the affected area. In such cases, spontaneous regrowth becomes impossible because the structures responsible for producing the hair have been damaged. Rare genetic conditions, such as ulerythema ophryogenes, can also cause a progressive miniaturization of the follicles and long‑lasting eyebrow loss.

Finally, in some cases the impression that the eyebrows are no longer growing back is simply related to the naturally slow pace of their growth cycle. Patience is needed: it takes several weeks for eyebrows to regrow.

Are there any solutions to make eyebrows grow back?

When you notice that the eyebrows are becoming sparse or seem not to grow back, several approaches can be considered. The choice of solution generally depends on the underlying cause of eyebrow loss, as well as the degree of thinning. In some cases, it is possible to stimulate regrowth, while in other situations, the goal will be more to increase eyebrow density or to improve their appearance through aesthetic solutions.

To stimulate the regrowth of eyebrows, certain cosmetic active ingredients, particularly peptides, are generating increasing interest. An open clinical study conducted in women over a period of twelve weeks evaluated the effectiveness of a solution containing a peptide extract applied daily to the eyebrows and eyelashes, combined with regular microneedling sessions. The results showed a visible improvement in the appearance of eyelashes and eyebrows, with an increase in hair thickness and the emergence of new hair follicles.

Improvements began to be observed as early as the fourth week and continued through the end of the study. The researchers also reported good treatment tolerance, with no adverse effects. These findings suggest that peptides, when combined with microneedling, may help improve the appearance and density of the eyebrows, although further studies are still needed, especially since this one was conducted without a control group.

When regrowth is limited or impossible, for example in cases where the hair follicles have been destroyed, dermatological solutions must be considered. Eyebrow transplantation, which involves implanting hair follicles taken from the scalp, is one of the possible options. A study conducted in patients with frontal fibrosing alopecia showed that 80% of patients exhibited good regrowth of the transplanted hairs between six and twelve months after the procedure. However, the long-term outcomes are more variable: most patients began to lose the transplanted hairs after three to four years, due to progression of the disease, which continues to destroy the follicles. This indicates that the technique can provide satisfactory short-term results, but that its effectiveness strongly depends on the underlying cause of eyebrow loss.

Other cosmetic solutions are available to improve the appearance of sparse eyebrows. Eyebrow extension techniques, which involve attaching extremely fine synthetic or natural hairs to the existing eyebrows, usually with a specific cosmetic adhesive, are highly effective. This procedure is performed in a beauty salon and makes it possible to temporarily fill in sparse areas to create the illusion of fuller eyebrows. A session typically lasts 30 to 60 minutes and the results can be visible for 2 to 4 weeks, depending on the natural hair growth cycle and aftercare. However, these extensions require regular touch-ups and can sometimes cause skin irritation or allergic reactions to the adhesive used.

When the eyebrows are very sparse or completely absent, some people turn to false eyebrows. Today, there are stick-on false eyebrows or self-adhesive false eyebrows that mimic the shape and texture of real hair. To apply them, you simply clean the skin, position the false eyebrow on the desired area, then secure it with a cosmetic adhesive. The effect is immediate and can last from a single day to several days, depending on the type of product and daily activity. This solution is especially used in certain medical situations, such as after chemotherapy, which is where the term comes from. Their advantage is that they are noninvasive and reversible, but they must be removed carefully to avoid irritating the skin.

Certain semi-permanent makeup techniques, such as microblading or microshading, can also help thicken the eyebrows. Microblading involves making fine incisions in the skin to deposit a pigment that mimics the appearance of natural hairs. Microshading, on the other hand, creates a more shaded effect, similar to light makeup. The results can last between 12 and 24 months, but often require touch-ups. These techniques must absolutely be performed by a qualified professional, as they carry certain risks (infection, scarring, allergic reactions to pigments, etc.).

Another option for concealing sparse eyebrows is to use eyebrow tattooing, a technique that is more long-lasting than conventional makeup. The principle involves implanting pigments into the superficial layers of the skin to redesign the eyebrow shape and create the illusion of hairs. This method can last for several years, although the color tends to fade gradually over time. Tattooing provides a relatively stable result, but it also has certain limitations: the shape and color are more difficult to modify, and correction can be complex if the result is unsatisfactory. As with semi-permanent makeup, there are also risks of infection, allergic reactions to the pigments, or scarring, which is why it is essential that the procedure be performed by a qualified professional under strict hygienic conditions.

Beyond cosmetic solutions, it remains important to take care of your eyebrows on a daily basis in order to preserve their density.

Avoiding overly aggressive hair removal, limiting repeated friction, and using nourishing treatments containing plant oils, peptides, or vitamins can help maintain healthy follicles. An appropriate routine does not always guarantee eyebrow regrowth, but it can help preserve their vitality and prevent their premature loss.

FAQ about eyebrows that no longer grow back.

Do eyebrows always grow back after plucking?

In most cases, yes. However, repeated hair removal over a long period can weaken hair follicles and slow regrowth, and may even lead to thinning areas.

How long do eyebrows take to grow back?

Eyebrow regrowth is relatively slow. It generally takes 4 to 8 weeks to observe visible regrowth.

Is it possible to naturally stimulate eyebrow regrowth?

Certain plant-based oils, such as castor oil or sweet almond oil, are often used to nourish the eyebrows. They do not necessarily speed up hair growth, but they can help keep the existing hairs healthy.

Why have my eyebrows become thinner over time?

Thinning of the eyebrows can be related to age, repeated plucking, hormonal changes, or certain dermatologic diseases. Aging also leads to a decrease in hair follicle activity.

Can eyebrows fall out because of stress?

Yes, significant stress can disrupt the hair growth cycle and cause a temporary shedding of hairs, known as telogen effluvium. This condition is generally reversible once the period of stress has ended.

Can a deficiency cause eyebrow loss?

Certain nutritional deficiencies, particularly in iron, zinc, or B vitamins, can contribute to hair and eyebrow loss.

Do eyebrows grow back after chemotherapy?

In most cases, yes. Eyebrows generally start to grow back a few weeks after the end of treatment, although their texture or color may be slightly different at first.
