How to thicken overly thin eyebrows?

Each era has its trend, and this also applies to eyebrows. While thin eyebrows have been in fashion since the 1990s, thick eyebrows have been making a comeback in recent years. Unfortunately, not everyone is blessed with naturally full eyebrows. Discover our tips for temporarily or permanently enhancing thin eyebrows.

Tip #1: Thicken your eyebrows with makeup.

If you wish to thicken your eyebrows temporarily, for a party or a meeting for instance, makeup will be your best ally. Pencils, markers, gel... there is a wide range of products designed for eyebrows. To densify the line of your eyebrows, we recommend primarily the eyebrow pencils or the eyebrow inks. These two products will allow you to achieve a natural result, provided you do not overly enlarge the natural line of your eyebrows.

If you're unsure whether to choose a pencil or ink and you're a beginner, know that the pencil is the most favored tool for beginners because it requires the least amount of precision. Available in a wide variety of shades, it allows for the creation of fine lines that mimic natural hairs. Ink, often presented in the form of pens or fine-tipped markers, offers the ability to draw more precise lines and to have a long-lasting makeup. Indeed, makeup applied with a pencil lasts about 8 hours, while a marker line can stay put for 2 days if the product is waterproof.

Tip #2: "Brow lamination" for thickening your eyebrows.

"Brow lamination" is a non-invasive eyebrow restructuring technique that enhances their thickness. It is typically done in a salon, although it can also be done at home. However, it is recommended to visit a professional, at least for the first time. Here's how a brow lamination session goes:

  1. Preparation : the eyebrows are cleaned and prepared for the procedure. The hairs are combed in the desired direction.

  2. Product Application : A gel or lotion containing reducing agents such as ammonium thioglycolate or cysteamine is applied to the eyebrows. This product helps to soften the hairs, which aids in straightening and reshaping them more easily afterwards. It also often contains emollients like vegetable oils (shea butter, mango butter...) to nourish the eyebrow and prevent its dehydration.

  3. Eyebrow Molding : The eyebrows are then combed and brushed into the desired shape using a silicone mold. This mold helps to keep the eyebrows in place during the lamination process.

  4. Application Time : The reducing agent is left on the eyebrows for about ten minutes. The duration can vary depending on the texture and thickness of the eyebrows.

  5. Fixation : Once the application time has elapsed, a fixative, often keratin-based, is applied to the eyebrows to neutralize the chemicals and set the new shape of the eyebrows.

  6. Finishing : the eyebrows are then combed, brushed, and possibly trimmed to achieve the desired shape and style.

Tip #3: Semi-permanent makeup to thicken your eyebrows.

Another method for thickening eyebrows is the use of semi-permanent makeup. Performed in a beauty salon, this technique involves applying pigments into the epidermis to densify the eyebrows. However, it's worth noting that it is once again preferable not to overly enlarge the natural line of the eyebrows to achieve a natural result. There are several methods of semi-permanent makeup, the two most common being the microblading and the microshading.

  • Microblading : this technique involves pigmenting the epidermis using a needle to mimic eyebrow hairs. This procedure is usually carried out in two sessions spaced a few weeks apart. You can maintain the result for about a year and a half without needing an additional touch-up.

  • The microshading : This is a technique similar to microblading that aims to create a shading effect behind the eyebrows. It is generally better tolerated by sensitive skin because, instead of drawing lines to mimic hairs, only small dots are made.

Tip #4: Resort to grafting for a permanent thickening of your eyebrows.

To thicken one's eyebrows, it is also possible to consider a surgical procedure : eyebrow transplantation. This method involves the extraction of hair follicles from the back of the scalp, an area referred to as the donor site, and their transplantation to the eyebrows. The technique for extracting the follicles can vary, but the one known as Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is often used. FUE involves extracting the hairs and their bulbs one by one from the scalp. It does not leave any marks after the procedure, except for small white dots that disappear over time.

Once the follicles are harvested, they are carefully implanted into the eyebrow areas while maintaining the natural orientation of the hairsfor a natural result. The procedure is typically performed under local anesthesia and may require multiple sessions, depending on the desired eyebrow density and thickness. It is important to emphasize that an eyebrow transplant is a procedure that must absolutely be performed by a professional as it is very difficult to modify the results once achieved. Therefore, it is necessary that it is done correctly.
