How is peppermint hydrosol produced?

Among the many varieties of mint, peppermint is the richest in volatile aromatic molecules, which gives it its characteristic refreshing scent. When applied to the skin, its hydrosol has a purifying and astringent action. Due to its slightly acidic pH, it visibly tightens the pores. Discover in detail the process of obtaining the peppermint hydrosol.

Process of obtaining peppermint hydrosol.

Thepeppermint hydrosol is obtained by hydrodistillation, also known as steam distillation. This technique allows for the extraction of two distinct fractions: theessential oil and thehydrosol. It occurs in several stages:

  1. Firstly, fresh leaves of peppermint are preferably harvested in the morning, from April to October (its deciduous foliage disappears in winter);

  2. Fresh leaves are combined with water in a distiller, then the mixture is heated;

  3. Once heated, water transforms into steam. In its path, it carries along the aromatic and water-soluble molecules of peppermint. After condensation, the water vapor in its liquid state is collected in a carboy. Floating on the surface is the essential oil, less dense than the water used for extraction, which is none other than the hydrosol. Originating from the same plant, the two fractions have similar properties, but the hydrosol is less concentrated in active species because the aromatic essences are present in smaller quantities. Therefore, it can be used without contraindications by children and pregnant women, unlike the essential oil.

Why incorporate it into your skincare routine?

Due to its acidic pH, thepeppermint hydrosol visibly tightens pores. Thanks to its purifying properties, it is also recommended for problematic skin and reduces imperfections. Thus, peppermint hydrosol is suitable for all skin types, especially for combination to oily skin, presenting with dilated pores and/or imperfections.

Furthermore, peppermint hydrosol stimulates blood circulation; it is thus effective against diffuse redness or to soothe the burn of shaving and hair removal. It is also recommended to alleviate the sensations of heavy legs. In addition, its immediate cooling action relieves sunburn and reduces feelings of discomfort.

The peppermint hydrosol from Typology.

Our peppermint hydrosol is obtained through distillation from peppermint leaves sourced fromorganic farming, grown and harvested in France. This treatment is suitable for combination to oily skin, acne-prone skin, as well as dilated pores.

How to use it? Apply the peppermint hydrosol all over the face in the morning and/or evening, using a cotton pad or directly with your fingers. It should be used on clean skin, before the serum and/or face cream.

How to preserve peppermint hydrosol?

Free from preservatives and made from fresh leaves, hydrosols are sensitive to light, oxidation, and heat. Therefore, it is important to store them in an opaque bottle, in a dry place away from light and heat. The shelf life of a hydrosol isapproximately 6 months after opening.
