How to Create a Skin Care Routine?

With the number of existing treatments, it is recommended to create a routine to take care of yourself on a regular basis. The order in which you use your skin care products will influence their effectiveness. We can help you establish your skin care routine according to your skin's needs.

Why Adopt a Daily Beauty Care Routine?

The definition of a skin care routine is the set of actions to be adopted and products to be applied, morning and night, to take care of your skin. Indeed, as the skin protects us every day from external aggressions (sun, pollution, wind, etc.), it requires the art of skin care to regenerate itself and prevent the inconveniences it may suffer, or even to treat already existing skin problems. In addition, an adapted beauty routine helps to provide hydration, thus limiting the early onset of signs of aging.

The Basic Steps to Building an Effective Face Care Routine.

To establish your skin care routine, follow these steps qualified as essential regardless of your skin type:

  1. Cleansing:

The first step in a daily beauty routine, and even the most essential, is cleansing. Indeed, at the end of the day, the skin is covered with dust, pollution particles, dead cells and different kinds of impurities accumulated throughout the day. This dirt can lead to imperfections (blackheads, pimples, etc.) or a dull complexion by clogging the skin pores. It is thus imperative to clean it. In addition, a properly cleansed face forms the basis for the rest of your skin care routine. During this step, use a gentle cleanser adapted to the skin concerns because if the skin feels attacked it will start to produce sebum in great quantity and will then lead to the appearance of imperfections and redness.

If during the day you apply make-up or even to remove traces of cosmetic products applied in the morning, opt for a double cleansing by adding a make-up remover before the cleansing product for optimal cleansing (make-up remover balm, micellar water, make-up remover oil, etc.). If the cleansing step has been done the night before, in the morning, just soak a cotton pad with a tonic or a hydrolat in order not to damage the hydrolipidic film that was formed during the night. This gesture is particularly recommended for dry and sensitive skin.

Little extra: Not mandatory, you can complete this step with the use of a tonic lotion or a hydrolat in order to refine the cleansing step by removing the last small traces of forgotten impurities, but also to rebalance the pH of the skin by neutralizing the drying effect of the limestone present in the tap water used to rinse the face.

  2. Hydration:

For the skin to be healthy, it needs a certain amount of moisture. Moisturization concerns all skin types, even oily skin. It will retain the skin's natural moisture to keep it hydrated throughout the day by providing a protective layer. A good moisturizing cream must contain humectants, i.e., compounds capable of penetrating the surface cells of the epidermis in order to attract and retain water molecules thanks to their hygroscopic properties (glycerin, hyaluronic acid, urea, propylene glycol, provitamin B5, etc.), emollients which are substances that will soften the skin and participate in the preservation of the skin barrier (fatty acids, fatty acid esters, ceramides, etc.), and occlusives that will form a film on the surface of the skin to physically limit the loss of water and thus prevent the skin from dehydrating (oils, butters, waxes). For dry skin, for example, choose a moisturizer with a thicker texture rich in emollients and occlusives, while combination to oily skin will turn to a face cream with a more fluid, light and less rich texture so that the skin does not shine more during the day.

  3. Sun protection:

It is an essential step to keep a healthy skin for a long time. Present in different forms and textures, the sole purpose of the solar product is to protect the skin from the sun's UV rays but also from the blue light of the screens, responsible for skin aging. This care product with an SPF allows reducing the exposure to the harmful UVA and UVB rays and thus the inconveniences they can cause. Indeed, the sun tends to aggravate all skin problems (acne, brown spots, rosacea, etc.) and to accelerate the natural aging process of the skin, by causing the synthesis of free radicals that will target the cell membrane and degrade collagen, an essential element involved in the appearance of wrinkles,

Personalize Your Facial Beauty Routine According to Your Skin’s Needs.

Once the basic daily beauty routine is in place, you can personalize it according to your concerns and needs (dilated pores, brown spots, dull complexion, wrinkles, redness, blackheads, etc.) by introducing targeted products that have active ingredients with a recognized action:

  • If you have imperfections such as blackheads or dilated pores, use a treatment based on azelaic acid, lactic acid, salicylic acid, gluconolactone (less irritating than AHAs) or glycolic acid. That will prevent the congestion of pores, reduce the formation of blackheads, make the pores less visible, and have an exfoliating action in order to regain an even skin texture. You can complete with a care containing niacinamide or zinc PCA which allow controlling the production of sebum. In the case of a pimple crisis, introduce into your skin care routine a serum based on active ingredients with antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, such as the blemish serum with salicylic acid.

  • If your skin shows signs of aging, among the most important cosmetic active ingredients recognized for this problem are vitamin C and its derivatives, coenzyme Q10, peptides and retinoids. These components will boost collagen production by fibroblasts and protect the skin against the attack of free radicals, responsible for premature aging. You can also incorporate into your facial routine products containing ingredients with a keratolytic action such as the glycolic acid exfoliating serum or the lactic acid gentle peeling serum.

  • If you have hyperpigmentation on your face, use products containing azelaic acid, tranexamic acid, arbutin acid, licorice extract or niacinamide in your  skin care routine. These active molecules can directly inhibit the melanogenesis process (melanin production) at different stages (tyrosinase synthesis, tyrosinase activation, melanin transfer from melanosomes to keratinocytes, etc.). Complete with the application of an exfoliating treatment. These peeling agents destroy the links between the most superficial cells of the skin to reorganize the epidermis by accelerating desquamation and to induce the rapid dispersion of melanin grains within the keratinocytes.

  • If you have redness due to a dilation of the skin's blood vessels in the dermis layer, then you also have an alteration of the barrier function of the epidermis. In order to heal better, the skin needs water and must therefore retain its hydration. The care products to be used must therefore target both inflammation and the repair and maintenance of the skin barrier. Choose products with niacinamide, polyglutamic acid, ceramides or Centella asiatica extract, which are appreciated for calming inflammation and improving skin hydration by restoring the lipid layer of the epidermis.

Patience, Regularity and Adaptability Are the Keys to an Effective Facial Routine.

The skin changes according to its environment, the seasons, and emotions. Indeed, the cold and wind in winter and the sun in summer present different constraints. For example, during the winter period, the skin produces fewer lipids and is therefore more sensitive to external aggressions (cold, wind, etc.), and therefore tends to dehydrate more easily. The skin will then need a more moisturizing and nourishing day cream. On the other hand, in summer, choose a lighter cream to avoid the feeling of oily and heavy skin. So, remember to adapt your skin care routine according to the season and the weather conditions.
