Layering, compatibilities, texture: the fundamentals of a skincare routine.

Given the constant evolution of the skincare industry, emerging trends, and new product launches, structuring a routine can seem complex. Yet a few simple principles can yield a coherent routine tailored to your skin type. Understanding the order of application and product compatibilities forms a crucial foundation. At Typology, we favor an approach grounded in the essentials—personalized, skin-respectful, and science-based. In this article, we offer a step-by-step guide to learn more about skincare layering, why it’s vital to master, and how to avoid common mistakes.

The four fundamental steps of a skincare routine.

One of the most effective ways to care for your skin is to adopt a daily routine tailored to your specific needs. This regimen helps preserve long-term hydration and radiance while preventing skin issues. However, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed when starting a skincare routine given the multitude of products available on the market. Yet building an effective regimen doesn’t have to be complicated. Cleansing, moisturizing, and sun protection constitute the bare essentials. To this, you can gradually add targeted treatments (serums, eye contour care, etc.) based on your skin concerns.

To identify the skincare products best suited to your skin, you can complete our skin analysis online. This step helps establish a consistent routine tailored to your skin type and concerns.

Key steps in a skincare regimen.

The four essential steps of any skincare regimen.

Preparing, targeting, sealing, and protecting constitute the minimal structure of an effective routine.

4 minutes to understand your skin. Our dermatological diagnostic guides you toward the ideal skincare for your specific needs. Simple, quick, personalized.

Step 1: Prepare the skin.

Cleansing cleansing is the cornerstone of any skincare routine. It removes impurities accumulated during the day (pollution particles, sunscreen, makeup residues, sebum, etc.) and prepares the skin for subsequent treatments. Depending on your skin type and preferences, different formulations of cleanser are available: oil, gel, cleansing milk, cream, or balm. Neglecting this step compromises the efficacy of all subsequent treatments, as active ingredients will struggle to penetrate through a barrier of impurities.

It is possible to perform a second cleansing to ensure perfectly clean skin and eliminate any residual impurities.

The skin preparation step isn’t just about cleansing the skin of daily impurities. It also involves exfoliating one to two times a week : that is, removing dead skin cells from the surface while unclogging pores and enhancing the absorption of active ingredients. You can opt for a granular scrub or a gentle chemical peel. Optionally using a toner or hydrolat can finalize this preparation phase to maintain skin balance and provide instant additional hydration.

Step 2: Target skin concerns with active ingredients.

With such a wide range of skin types and concerns (blackheads, brown spots, excess sebum, dark circles, etc.), targeted treatments (facial serums, eye contour care, etc.) form the core of a skincare routine. These products contain active ingredients formulated at high concentrations, specifically designed to address a particular concern.

Practical recommendations:

  • Introduce only one active ingredient at a time for one to two weeks to assess your skin’s tolerance.

  • Do not layer more than three serums in the same regimen.

  • Before applying new products to the entire face, perform a skin patch test on a small area of skin to verify the absence of any adverse reactions.

Step 3: Seal in hydration and optimize barrier function.

Morning and evening, it is essential to apply a moisturizing product. It helps to seal in the active ingredients applied in the previous step and supports the skin’s barrier function. It also helps reduce transepidermal water loss, maintain skin suppleness, and strengthen its resistance against external aggressors. Available as a cream, gel, balm, or oil, the moisturizer adapts to every skin type.

Step 4: Protect the skin from ultraviolet (UV) radiation.

Applying a sunscreen is an essential final step in any morning routine. By blocking harmful UV rays from the sun, it reduces the appearance of pigment spots and the risk of skin cancer, and it protects against premature skin aging. If your day cream doesn’t contain UV filters, you can use a standalone sunscreen as the final step.

Consistency in the daily application of a skincare regimen is more important than the volume of products used.

The basic principles of layering skincare.

The layering involves applying skincare products in a precise sequence to optimize the penetration of active ingredients and ensure their efficacy. One of the fundamental rules is to always apply formulations from the lightest to the heaviest consistency, but that’s not the only factor to consider. When it comes to skincare layering, it is essential to follow three basic rules:

  • Apply treatments in order from the lightest texture to the thickest.

The fundamental principle of layering involves gradually transitioning from fluid, low-viscosity treatments to thicker products. This progression enhances the diffusion of active ingredients and prevents rich textures from blocking lighter formulations. Indeed, fluid products—similar to toning lotions or aqueous serums—penetrate the skin more rapidly. Then, thicker formulations (oils, creams, etc.) work to seal in the benefits of the earlier treatments while reinforcing the skin barrier.

Order of layering skin care textures.

The order of product textures in a skincare routine.

Applying care products from the most fluid to the thickest promotes progressive, uniform absorption.

  • Apply water-based formulations before oil-based ones.

Aqueous treatments should be applied first to prevent an oil-based layer from limiting their penetration. Reversing the order can result in pilling and areas of uneven absorption.

What about our hydrating serum (A31) with hyaluronic acid:

With a viscous texture, our hydrating serum containing hyaluronic acid forms a thin film on the skin’s surface due to the presence of high-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid. To optimize its application and reduce pilling, it is recommended to apply it to slightly damp skin, allow each layer of product to absorb before adding a new one, and favor gentle pressing motions rather than rubbing.

  • Ensure compatibility among active ingredients.

If layering is essential, it is equally crucial to avoid incompatible products that can reduce the product’s efficacy and prevent achieving the desired results. Additionally, this can increase the risk of irritation and trigger adverse reactions, potentially compromising the skin barrier and leading to prolonged sensitivity, as well as exacerbating existing conditions.

Asset compatibilities: what works and what doesn’t.

Faced with the abundance of skincare products available today, it can be difficult to determine which combinations are appropriate and which are not. While some active ingredients can be paired to boost their effects, others are not designed for concurrent use and should be applied at separate times to maintain skin homeostasis. Here is a summary table of compatible pairings and precautions for our different active ingredients used in Typology facial serums :

FAQ about layering, compatibilities, texture: the fundamentals of a skincare routine.

What happens when the order of care is not followed?

The order of application affects the ability of active ingredients to penetrate the skin. An overly occlusive texture applied too early can slow down or even prevent the absorption of lighter formulas, reducing their effectiveness. Conversely, layering very fluid textures after thicker treatments can lead to uneven spreading or pilling.

A consistent order, from lightest to richest, optimizes the diffusion of active ingredients and sensory experience.

What are the substances that should not be combined?

Certain combinations can decrease the efficacy of active ingredients or increase the risk of irritation, particularly for sensitive skin. It is generally not recommended to combine multiple keratolytic agents in a single routine (AHA, BHA, retinoids), as their exfoliating effects can accumulate. Additionally, DHA should not be used with peptides, as it can degrade them. Traditional Vitamin C (INCI: Ascorbic Acid), formulated at an acidic pH (3 - 4), should not be combined with AHAs, which can increase irritation and disrupt its stability. It is also less stable when layered over treatments with a higher pH, which can limit its effectiveness, as is the case with retinoid-based treatments.

At Typology, we favor more stable vitamin C derivatives that do not require an acidic pH, which limits formulation constraints and allows for better tolerance and compatibility with other active ingredients.

Is it possible to mix several serums with similar texture in the hand at the same time before applying them?

Mixing multiple serums can dilute certain active ingredients or alter their sensory properties. It also increases the risk of pilling if the textures are rich in gums or thickeners. Therefore, applying them separately is preferable: it allows for better control over the quantity, order of absorption, and skin tolerance, while also limiting unexpected interactions between formulas.

Is it possible to layer multiple serums containing the same active ingredients?

This is possible because the active ingredients are formulated at concentrations that adhere to safety thresholds established in toxicology, known as NOAEL ("No Observed Adverse Effect Level"), including in cases of combined use. However, layering identical ingredients can, depending on skin sensitivity, increase the risk of irritation or skin imbalance, especially with potent actives (exfoliating acids, retinoids, concentrated vitamin C, high-concentration niacinamide, etc.). When in doubt, prioritize alternation rather than layering.

Why do some products pill when layered?

The pilling occurs when film-forming polymers, gums, or thickeners accumulate on the skin's surface. If multiple layers are applied too quickly or in excessive amounts, these components can clump together and form pills. The phenomenon is exacerbated when the textures are incompatible, when the skin is not adequately exfoliated or cleansed, or due to the nature of the skin itself. To minimize pilling, it is recommended to apply small amounts of product, wait between each step, and avoid excessively "working" the product during application.
