Transported by sailors in the 17th century for its vitamins, the brède mafane is a plant that has been used for many years in Madagascar, as well as in La Réunion, for its nutritional and medicinal benefits. It gets its name from the Malagasy "bredy mafana" which means "hot herb" in reference to the flavor of the leaves which, whether raw or cooked, are both spicy and refreshing, and provide for a few seconds a sensation similar to that of mouth anesthesia. In cosmetics, its extract strengthens the architecture of the dermis and stimulates the biomechanical functions of fibroblasts, thus reducing the wrinkled appearance of the skin.
