What is a tinted balm composed of?

Naturally lacking a protective layer, lips tend to feel tight and dry out quickly, especially in winter. Therefore, it is necessary to provide them with the hydration they need, while enhancing their appearance, and thus prevent chapping and dryness. This highlights the importance of using a tinted balm. But what is a tinted balm made of? Here's what you need to know on this subject.

Tinted Balm: What is it?

The tinted balm is a lip care product that combines several functions at once: it hydrates, colors, repairs, nourishes, and protects the skin of the lips in one application. This fatty substance often comes in the form of sticks or creams. It is not only a beauty product, but also a care and prevention product. Thanks to it, your mouth will sport a nice glamorous effect with a natural finish, while being hydrated and protected.

An effective tinted lip balm composition.

To choose the right tinted balm, one must consider its composition. Generally, tinted moisturizing lip balms contain the following ingredients:

  • A repairing agent to aid in the regeneration of the skin's hydrolipidic film;

  • An ingredient with moisturizing and emollient properties to help protect against dehydration;

  • An occlusive agent to protect the lips from external aggressions and water loss.

Firstly, it is advisable to steer clear of tinted balms that contain chemical ingredients (synthetic hydrocarbons, BHT, BHA, silicones, etc...), given the potential effects of these components on the body once ingested. Indeed, the care applied to your lips ends up being largely ingested at one point or another (about 20 to 50 mg per day). However, certain ingredients in tinted balms have been singled out and suspected to be endocrine disruptors or carcinogenic. These facts still require verification and a more in-depth study on the issue, but at this stage it is preferable to take precautions and avoid them, especially if they are to be applied to our lips. Similarly, be wary of tinted balms containing essential oils due to their allergenic power and potential drying effect. Instead, opt for a tinted balm containing natural ingredients such as oils, waxes, or vegetable butters.
