What you need to know about CI 77491.
Used within the framework of the I.N.C.I. system, the C.I. designation for "Colour Index", followed by 5 digits, allows for the clear identification of dyes or pigments used in skincare and makeup products. Long used as a pigment, CI 77491 imparts a red color to products, a primary color.
For safety reasons, it is advisable to favor synthetic versions of iron oxide, produced in laboratories, for use in cosmetic care, despite their presence in nature. Indeed, naturally produced varieties may contain impurities. Heavy metals can contaminate uncontrolled oxides (manganese or other organic materials).
The production of iron oxides occurs through processes named:
Thermal decomposition;
Precipitation;
Calcination.
Permitted by European regulations, iron oxides are not toxic, do not irritate the skin, and are not allergenic.
What is its utility in cosmetics?
CI 77491 is an intense brick-red cosmetic pigment. Of mineral origin, it is used in the creation of makeup products (foundations, concealers, face powders, blushes, eyeshadows, lipsticks, etc.), as well as in cosmetic products (soaps, body lotions, skincare creams, etc...) at low percentages to provide color and nuance to liquid or solid preparations..
