Vitamin B12: When should it be used?

The vitamin B12, or cobalamin, is a molecule essential for the proper functioning of the nervous system and the formation of red blood cells. It also plays a crucial role in DNA synthesis and the energy metabolism of cells. Beyond its biological functions, the vitamin B12 is appreciated in cosmetics for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, allowing it to soothe skin irritations and protect the skin from damage caused by oxidative stress (genetic mutations, destabilization of lipid membranes, melanogenesis process, vascularization...). Moreover, some in vitro studies suggest that cobalamin could be involved in angiogenesis and contribute to the formation of granulation tissue, a transient tissue rich in vessels and cells produced during the healing process.

The versatility of vitamin B12 allows it to be incorporated into various ranges of cosmetics.

  • When is the best time of day to use Vitamin B12?

The vitamin B12 can be used both in the morning and in the evening, before or after sun exposure. Indeed, it is non-photosensitizing, meaning it does not increase the skin's sensitivity to the sun's rays. However, although it possesses photoprotective properties derived from its ability to neutralize free radicals, it is important to keep in mind that vitamin B12 cannot replace a sunscreen. To protect against the risks of skin cancer, brown spots, or simply to prevent skin sagging, remember to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen daily and to reapply generously if exposure is prolonged.

  • How often should Vitamin B12 be used?

Skincare with vitamin B12 can be used once or twice a day, depending on the other ingredients in their composition. This very gentle active ingredient is generally very well tolerated by all skin types. However, it is advised that individuals sensitive to cobalt exercise caution and pre-test cosmetics containing vitamin B12, as this molecule has a cobalt atom at the center of its chemical structure. Performing a tolerance test before using a new product is, in fact, recommended for everyone.

  • For how long should one use Vitamin B12?

As previously stated, the vitamin B12 is very well tolerated when applied topically. Therefore, it can be incorporated into a daily skincare routine, without any maximum duration to adhere to. Although it is unlikely, if redness or itching were to occur following the application of a vitamin B12 skincare product, it is recommended to stop using the product.

Note : The timing, frequency, and duration of taking vitamin B12 dietary supplements vary depending on the reasons for starting the regimen. In this case, we advise you to follow the recommendations of the suppliers and the health professional who prescribed you the vitamin B12.
