A few words on ingrown hairs.
A hair is said to be ingrown when it cannot penetrate the barrier of the dermis and exit the orifice of the hair canal. The growth of the hair therefore occurs inside the skin and not on the outside. This leads to the appearance of small red bumps inflamed that can itch, and even be painful. In cases where these bumps have become infected, most often due to their manipulation, they can swell and fill with pus. Theorigin of ingrown hairs can be various: type of hair removal, type of hair, repeated rubbing of the skin with tight clothing, etc...
Although they affect both women and men and can appear on all parts of the body, ingrown hairs are typically observed in areas subjected to repeated friction, such as with tight clothing, or areas subjected to hair removal or shaving. In men, the most affected areas are the chin, chest, and neck, and in women, they most often occur on the legs, underarms, and bikini area.
Ingrown Hairs: What can be done to get rid of them?
When you have an ingrown hair, the golden rule is to absolutely not touch it ! Do not attempt to extract it by tearing your skin as this could lead to infection and result in folliculitis (a red pimple with pus) or a scar that further increases the risk of ingrown hairs.
Furthermore, it is crucial not to re-wax a region that contains ingrown hairs so as not to exacerbate the situation. When the ingrown hair is present, we have two solutions to eliminate it:
Apply locally to your ingrown hairs a warm water compress, but not scalding, in order to soften the skin and facilitate the hair's emergence;
Use locally a lotion containing hydroxy acids (glycolic acid, salicylic acid, gluconolactone, etc...) which will allow the natural exit of the hair through exfoliation. Our local imperfections serum is concentrated in salicylic acid and zinc , which are powerful antibacterial agents, thus helping to fight inflammation. In addition, salicylic acid has excellent keratolytic properties, meaning it eliminates dead cells on the surface of the epidermis.
Ingrown Hairs: How to Prevent Recurrence?
Their development can be prevented by following these few tips:
Perform an exfoliating treatment before shaving.
It is crucial to exfoliate your skin, as thicker skin is more prone to causing ingrown hairs. Therefore, exfoliating before hair removal helps to soften the skin and remove dead cells, aiding the hairs to break through the skin.
Our nourishing body scrub is well suited for this. It gently exfoliates the skin using the apricot kernel powder, while nourishing the skin withsweet almond vegetable oil. Moreover, its formula also containssuper lavandin essential oil , known for its anti-inflammatory and healing properties.
Hydrate your skin morning and evening.
We advise you to hydrate your skin daily in order tosoften it and thus facilitate the natural emergence of hair at the hair follicle opening. You can use our nourishing body cream which nourishes the skin thanks to the combination of lipid-replenishing active ingredients: squalane, plum oil and shea butter. This step is even more important after shaving. Indeed, shaving is a fairly aggressive action for the skin and hydrating it helps to relieve irritations.
For those who wish to continue using a razor, prioritize single-blade razors with a lubricating part or electric razors. Your skin will be less assaulted by the blades. Also consider shaving in the direction of hair growth. Limit the number of strokes in the same area as this can irritate the skin. Avoid dry shaving and do it in the shower using a shaving cream or gel. It is also essential to maintain impeccable hygiene. Rinse your razor with warm water and change the blade regularly. Moreover, do not use someone else's razor or lend your razor as this increases the risk of infections. You can also opt for hair removal with depilatory cream which does not cause the same discomfort as the razor.
Laser hair removal: the definitive solution to permanently eliminate ingrown hairs.
This is the only effective method to eliminate ingrown hairs. Indeed, it destroys 80 to 90% of hairs at their roots. However, a destroyed hair can no longer become ingrown! The laser targets the melanin in the hairs. The beam of light emitted by the laser destroys and burns the hair.The specific wavelength of the laser destroys only the hair follicles without damaging the skin: this is the principle ofselective photothermolysis. Laser hair removal can be performed on all areas of the body, including the face.
