Heat Bumps: Origins, Causes, and Definition.

Referred to as "miliaria sudorales" or "prickly heat" in medical terminology, heat rashes are common, benign, and non-serious skin conditions. They tend to naturally disappear after one or two days.

What do they look like? They can be small transparent vesicles that resemble droplets of water or red bumps. They are primarily found in exposed areas (forehead, neck, chest, hands, feet...) and folds such as the armpits or groin.

What causes them? Heat bumps are caused by excessive sweating related to high temperatures. With heat, the sweat glands produce a lot of sweat that clogs the sweat ducts, leading to these red bumps. Therefore, it is a natural skin reaction to expel the trapped sweat under the epidermis.

This phenomenon can affect every individual, but it is particularly common among infants and young children. Even though heat rash is harmless, it can cause discomfort due to itching. It is possible to adopt certain measures to prevent their occurrence.

How to prevent the occurrence of heat bumps?

As previously mentioned, these pimples are not serious but can be uncomfortable and sometimes unsightly. Here are some tips to limit their development:

  • Wear loose and lightweight clothing.

During the summer season, it is recommended to wear loose clothing to help the skin expel sweat, so as not to clog the sweat ducts. Moreover, tight clothing causes friction that will only exacerbate any potential irritations caused by heat rashes.

  • Limiting exposure to UV rays.

Long-term exposure to the sun often leads to excessive sweating which can cause the onset of heat rash.

  • Do not apply sunscreen with an overly greasy texture.

This may promote the obstruction of sweat ducts and thus lead to the emergence of heat rashes. The sunscreens from Typology have a light and fluid texture. They do not leave white traces and are composed of 82% natural origin ingredients. For the face and body, they offer broad-spectrum protections (SPF30 and SPF50).

  • Dry off after each swim.

During the summer season, swimming is a way to relax and lower body heat. However, it is important to dry off thoroughly after exiting the water, as moisture promotes the appearance of heat rashes.

  • Avoid exercising under the sun.

Physical activities are energy-consuming for the body and cause sweating. Engaging in sports under the sun will promote perspiration, thereby increasing sweat production.

  • Adhere to hygiene rules.

Apart from perspiration, other impurities that accumulate on the skin can also block the sweat ducts. To prevent heat rashes, it is therefore recommended to maintain cleanliness and wash daily.
