Shaving: What to Do and What Not to Do

Shaving is a method of temporary hair removal that can be applied to various areas of the body such as the face, chest, pubic area, armpits, legs, and so on. Even though it is a relatively simple practice, it still requires certain precautions to avoid any skin discomfort.

The essential steps for a successful shave.

Exfoliate your skin a few days before.

Performed once a week, typicallytwo days before shaving, skin exfoliation stimulates cellular renewal and removes accumulated keratinocytes from the skin's surface, preventing pore blockage. Additionally, exfoliating brings out ingrown hairs, ensuring a close and clean shave. It is advisable to use fine-grained and non-abrasive scrubs for sensitive areas such as the underarms, bikini line, and face. The legs, on the other hand, can tolerate a scrub with larger and more angular grains.

We have developed three scrubs using micro-exfoliating grains derived from ground apricot kernels. The facial scrub is less concentrated in abrasive particles than the body scrubs, in order to protect your skin.

  • The radiance facial scrub with rosehip oil and organic carrot macerate evens out the complexion and brings brightness. It is particularly suitable for dull, lackluster skin, as well as dry and uncomfortable skin.

  • The nourishing body scrub helps to soften and smooth the skin. It is particularly suitable for dry and uncomfortable skin.

  • The invigorating body scrub contains organic green coffee macerate (draining) as well as essential oils of lemongrass and organic cedar (anti-cellulite). It is recommended for smoothing, firming, and toning the skin while reducing the appearance of cellulite.

These four treatments contain essential oils, they should not be used by pregnant women and children under the age of 6.

Moisturize the area to be shaved and use a foaming gel.

Shaving with water alone increases the risk of irritation and cuts. Always use a shaving foam or gel when you shave. This product will create a protective barrier between the razor blade and your skin: it thus reduces friction and therefore the risk of cuts. Moreover, the presence of foam helps you determine the areas you have already shaved. This way, you avoid going over the same area multiple times, thereby preventing skin irritation.

Apply a moisturizing/nourishing treatment after shaving.

Post-shave hydration should not be overlooked. During shaving, the hydrolipidic film present on the skin's surface, composed of water and fat, is disrupted. Without compensation from a moisturizing product, the skin becomes dry. Moreover, the stratum corneum, or outermost layer of the skin, is thinner after shaving, making it the ideal time to provide the skin with active ingredients and nutrients that will be more easily absorbed, such as nourishing, firming, slimming treatments, and so on.

Following a beard shave, for example, opt for the nourishing cream Hyaluronic Acid 1% + Shea Butter. Enriched with lipid-replenishing and moisturizing active ingredients, it restores suppleness to the skin and reduces feelings of tightness. If you prefer a more minimalist, fragrance-free formula, the moisturizing cream with 9 ingredients would be more suitable. Its light and non-greasy texture is suitable for dry, normal, and combination skin, even sensitive ones.

Regarding other areas besides the face that are subjected to shaving, to restore the hydrolipidic film, you can apply one of our following body creams, depending on your skin needs.

  • The nourishing cream Squalane 10% + Shea Butter is enriched with nourishing active ingredients. It restores the skin's lipid barrier, reduces feelings of tightness, and protects the skin from external aggressions.

  • The firming cream Caffeine 2% + Guarana extract contains firming agents and helps to tighten skin tissues and reduce the appearance of cellulite.

  • The moisturizing cream with 10 ingredients is a minimalist formula that allows for the hydration of all skin types, even sensitive ones. It is formulated with 99% natural origin ingredients.

What one should avoid doing during and after a shaving session.

Shave against the direction of hair growth.

Shaving against the grain increases the risk of cuts and irritations. Shaving quickly becomes uncomfortable. Moreover, this practice can twist the hair, causing it to deviate from its path and curl back into itself, becoming a ingrown hair.

Exposure to the sun.

It is advisable toavoid sun exposure for 12 hours following a shaving session. Indeed, exposing oneself to the sun after shaving is a bad idea, as the skin without hair is more sensitive than usual and less well protected from UV rays. The epidermis is weakened and becomes even more sensitive and receptive to the harmful effects of the sun.
