Botanical name: Calendula officinalis.

Extraction process: Solar maceration and extraction of calendula flowers from organic farming in organic sunflower oil.

Family: Asteraceae.

Part of the plant extracted: Fresh flowers.

Location: Central Europe, especially on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, as well as in southwestern Asia.

Flowering: From May until the first frost (usually in October).

Properties

Antibacterial: Slows down bacterial propagation;
Antioxidant: Protect and avoid premature degeneration of skin cells by deactivating free radicals generated by all kinds of factors (UV rays, pollution, cigarette smoke ...), property conferred by the presence of flavoids ;
Soothing, anti-inflammatory: Reduces inflammation and calms irritation because of the presence of faradiol esters;
Hydrating: Fights against skin dryness, thanks to the fatty acids which will nourish and protect the skin gently;
Protective, firming: Prevent skin slackening by inhibiting the activity of matrix metalloproteinases (MMP), enzymes responsible for degrading collagen ;

Preservation

This oily macerate is sensitive to oxidation and should therefore be kept in a cool, dry place, away from heat and direct sunlight in its amber bottle.

Contra-Indications and Precautions

The cosmetic use of the oily calendula macerate does not cause undesirable effects. However, as a precaution, people allergic to Asteraceae should seek medical advice before use. Pregnant women and young children can use it in external application. Avoid contact with the eyes.

Calendula is a plant with yellow-orange flowers that give off a sweet, intoxicating scent. It is also known as "garden marigold". This name comes from the Latin "soisequier" which means "which follows the sun". This is because the calendula flowers open and close in time with the sun. As for the name "calendula", it originates from the Latin word "calendes", in reference to the fact that its blooming starts every month in spring until the beginning of winter. Since the Middle Ages, calendula flowers have been appreciated for their tinctorial and medicinal properties. They were used in particular against insect bites and snake bites. Thereafter, the use of calendula continues to expand and develop, particularly in cosmetic compositions in the form of oily macerate for its softening, soothing and anti-inflammatory properties.
