What are the benefits of an eyelash and eyebrow serum?

Typically composed of vegetable oils and strengthening active ingredients, eyelash and eyebrow serums are full of benefits. What are their effects on these types of hair? Let's delve in.

Eyelashes and eyebrows: delicate fibers.

Originally, eyelashes and eyebrows serve to protect the eyes from impurities and sweat. However, numerous external factors can weaken them: extensions, permanent or temporary makeup, pollution, repeated or unconscious rubbing with the fingers, and more. Additionally, with hormonal changes, menopause or andropause for men, their quantity and quality diminish. Not to mention certain ophthalmological pathologies, such as blepharitis (inflammation of the eyelids), which can also damage them.

The cycle of eyelashes and eyebrows is similar to that of hair. It occurs in three phases : the growth, the stagnation (catagen phase) and the shedding (telogen phase). Each eyelash and eyebrow independently follows its own cycle; this is why the eyes are constantly protected by long eyelashes and thick eyebrows. The growth phase extends over one to two months. Hairs that have completed their growth go through the second phase (stagnation). During this transition period, the hair follicle shrinks. This period lasts about three weeks. During this transition phase, the eyelash or eyebrow hair can fall out prematurely and regrowth does not occur instantly. Regrowth will not be initiated until the end of the catagen phase. Throughout this cycle, it is important to take care of your eyelashes and eyebrows so they remain healthy and do not fall out prematurely. Hence the usefulness of a strengthening serum for eyelashes and eyebrows!

The numerous benefits of a serum for eyelashes and eyebrows.

The mode of action of this type of treatment is based on its composition. Thus, a serum for eyelashes and eyebrows can contain various compounds.

  • Active ingredients to limit the premature fall of eyelashes and eyebrows.

Several compounds are known to strengthen these types of hair: biotin, panthenol, centella asiatica extract, peptides... Their modes of action vary. For instance, the active combo of Biotinyl-GHK / panthenol stimulates the synthesis of collagen and laminin, molecules responsible for anchoring the bulb in the epidermis, thus strengthening eyelashes and eyebrows. Biologically, peptides tend to work by inhibiting the activity of the cytokine TGF-beta-1, a protein activated by dihydrotestosterone (DHT) that prematurely triggers the catagen phase of the hair follicle, hastening its fall. The extract of Centella Asiatica, on the other hand, stimulates micro-circulation, thus promoting hair growth. Concurrently, the madecassoside, a molecule found in Centella asiatica, will work deeply and stimulate blood vessels, limiting hair loss.

  • Vegetable oils to nourish eyelashes and eyebrows

Some plant-based oils, such as castor, coconut, or avocado, can rejuvenate brittle hair by making it strong and thick. They help to limit hair loss, especially during makeup removal. These oils provide support to the dermal matrix and nourish the hair follicle to extend its life cycle. Moreover, castor oil has a dual function: it nourishes these hair follicles and stimulates hair regrowth. Indeed, it has been demonstrated that ricinoleic acid, which makes up more than 80% of castor oil, can reverse the process related to hair follicle loss by inhibiting the action of prostaglandin D2 (PGD2). It also helps to hydrate and strengthen eyelashes and eyebrows, which will tend to grow more quickly as a result.

  • Hydrating compounds to limit their dehydration.

To deeply hydrate these hair follicles, certain eyelash and eyebrow serums are enriched with hyaluronic acid. This compound comes to strengthen the structure of the lashes and protect them from dryness, ensuring their good health.
