Blackheads: What are they?
Blackheads, also known as "open comedones", occur as a result ofskin pores being blocked by an excess of sebum and the accumulation of dead cells. Upon contact with air, the latter oxidizes, hence its black color. They are generally present in areas rich in sebaceous glands, such as the nose, chin, and forehead. Blackheads can also appear on the shoulders, chest, and back.
