Everything you need to know about beard oil.

Whether it's just starting to grow or already full, a beard needs to be maintained. There are products specifically designed for its care, including beard oil. In this article, find everything you need to know about this type of product.

What exactly is beard oil?

Unlike the rest of the face, the area where hair grows is often weakened by the use of razors. Thebeard oil maintains both the hair and the skin in this area of the face. Generally, a beard oil is composed of two families of ingredients:

  • Carrier oils, which are typically vegetable oils derived from the cold pressing of seeds from certain fruits and plants such as theargan oil or the hemp oil;

  • One or more essential oils, which are natural aromas to soothe the skin and provide a fragrance to the product.

The other ingredients typically present are glycerin for its humectant properties and nourishing butters such as shea butter.

Why use a beard oil?

There are several reasons why it is recommended to use a beard oil:

  • Softening the hairs.
Beard hairs tend to be coarser than head hair. Beard oil softens and adds shine to the hairs. This type of care also tames unruly hairs so that the entire beard appears cleaner and more styled.

  • Limiting the growth of bacteria.

An unkempt beard can be more prone to bacterial growth than the rest of the face. In this regard, some beard oils contain essential oils with recognized anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties such as thecamphor rosemary essential oil or the linalool thyme essential oil.

  • Hydrate the skin and limit potential itching associated with shaving.

Shaving tends to disrupt the hydrolipidic film and dry out the epidermis. A beard oil typically contains moisturizing and lipid-replenishing active ingredients to care for the skin beneath the hair.

  • Delivering a fragrance that is often fresh and pleasant.

  • Promote hair growth.

Some beard oils contain strengthening agents such as basil extract that stimulate hair growth. Therefore, they can be relevant for filling in any gaps and densifying the beard, giving it a more uniform appearance.

How to use beard oil?

Depending on the vegetable oil and essential oil used, the skincare product can be allergenic to the skin. It is therefore recommended to always start by performing a skin tolerance test by applying a small amount of the product in question to the crook of the elbow. If you do not have a skin reaction, you can apply it to your face.

Beard oil is best applied to a clean beard; this allows it to more easily penetrate the hair fiber. The optimal time to use beard oil is generally after a shower or after washing your face. If you have a dry and brittle beard, you can use beard oil both morning and evening, daily. However, those with oily skin should rather apply beard oil once a day or even every other day, to improve the appearance of the beard without creating an overly greasy effect.
