How is niacinamide produced?

Niacinamide is a multifunctional active ingredient increasingly found in skincare products. As an antioxidant, it combats premature aging of the epidermis. Its sebum-regulating and antibacterial properties also make it an excellent ally for oily skin (+), whether or not it has blemishes. Let's focus on the process of obtaining this ingredient.

Niacinamide, an active ingredient obtained synthetically.

With the molecular formula C6H5NO2, the niacinamide molecule, also known as nicotinamide, is a water-soluble derivative of vitamin B3. This active ingredient is synthesized in the laboratory through a chemical reaction. This process involves the hydrolysis of a reactant, 3-cyanopyridine (with the molecular formula NCC5H4N), in a basic environment. In other words, the 3-cyanopyridine reacts with water in the presence of hydroxide ions (OH-) which act as catalysts (they accelerate the reaction and allow for a higher yield). This is followed by a purification step through ion exchange and the removal of water by evaporation. Finally, the end product of the reaction, niacinamide, is isolated and dried by atomization.
