1. Prioritize a natural composition.
Hybrid, a tinted oil exhibits the characteristics of a gloss but provides the properties of a lip balm. Indeed, it colors the lips while repairing them in case of dryness or other discomfort.
Regarding its composition, a tinted lip oil is a single-phase oily solution, meaning it contains only lipophilic compounds (fatty substances). It typically includes one or more vegetable oils, one or more vegetable waxes to provide consistency, as well as active ingredients and preservatives in smaller quantities. The active molecules can serve to plump the lips like hyaluronic acid, provide a warming effect like chili extract, or smooth the fine lines around the mouth. Vegetable oils are generally added to these formulas to nourish the lips. They also act preventively, that is, they deposit a protective film on the surface of the lips to prevent them from dehydrating or to protect them from external aggressions. In addition, tinted lip oils also contain pigments, which are responsible for the color upon application.
Some tinted lip oils contain oils and/or mineral waxes derived from petrochemicals. Their extraction process (refining) is harmful to the environment, and these synthetic oils provide no cosmetic benefit. Therefore, it is advisable to avoid such ingredients when purchasing a lip oil. Mineral substances can be identified on INCI lists by the following terms: Paraffinum Liquidum, Petrolatum, Cera Microcristallina, Ozokerite, Ceresin, Mineral Oil, words with -methicone or -siloxane, polybutene... In addition, we also advise you to avoid tinted oils containing colorants in the form of nanoparticles such as titanium dioxide (I.N.C.I.: CI 77891). In 2006, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified titanium dioxide (TiO2) in the group of substances "possibly carcinogenic to humans" (Group 2B): when inhaled, regardless of the particle size (nano or not).
2. Selecting the right shade.
If you desire a natural finish and a visually plumping effect, opt for lighter shades, or even a transparent tinted oil. However, if your goal is to enhance the color of your lips and give your makeup a boost, don't hesitate to choose more intense colors, such as red, coral, or purple.
Note : Tinted oils are not lipsticks! The formulas are generally less pigmented and the result remains less colorful.
3. Select the right ingredients according to your needs.
If your lips lack radiance or show signs of damage caused by external aggressors, consider using a tinted oil containing antioxidant compounds such as vitamin E or tocopherol.
If your primary goal is to plump your lips, steer your choice towards a tinted oil containing a warming active ingredient that will stimulate microcirculation, such as chili extract, or one rich in hydrating actives likehyaluronic acid.
Furthermore, if you wish to soothe tightness and chapped lips, it is then appropriate to rely on formulas enriched with anti-inflammatory compounds such as aspic lavender essential oil or even calendula oil macerate.
