The use of aloe vera gel to combat dark circles and bags under the eyes.
Aloe vera gel is a valuable ally for reducing dark circles and puffiness. It primarily helps to regulate microcirculation of the blood. Several studies have highlighted a vasoconstrictive effect of aloe vera gel, although the exact mechanism involved has not been explicitly defined. It is also suggested that the minerals in the gel could provide elasticity to red blood cells, which would thin the blood: this would then circulate better throughout the body. These properties are beneficial for individuals with bluish dark circles, which are due to poor blood circulation.
However, it should be noted that if dark circles are hereditary in origin, it is impossible to diminish them.
Furthermore, aloe vera gel has a tightening effect on the skin. This property is beneficial for delaying the appearance of fatty pockets and hollow dark circles, making aloe vera a preventive solution to these issues. Glucomannan, a polysaccharide that is part of the gel's composition, influences the fibroblast growth factor, TGF-β1, and stimulates cellular activity and proliferation. Fibroblasts are predisposed to the production of collagen and elastin, thus the synthesis of these molecules is increased. They contribute to the preservation of the skin's structure, as well as its flexibility and elasticity. Strengthening these fibers therefore helps to slow down the process of fatty tissue slippage, which is responsible for the formation of bags.
Aloe vera gel also possesses antioxidant properties, which allow it to delay cellular aging. Indeed, it boosts the production of metallothioneins, proteins that increase the resistance of cellular tissues to oxidative stress. Moreover, it contains vitamins A, C, and E, which are antioxidants capable of neutralizing free radicals.
How is aloe vera gel applied?
Applying a treatment locally based on aloe vera gel or pure aloe vera gel can help reduce dark circles and puffiness, and allows you to benefit from all its effects on the eye contour. Non-photosensitizing, it can be used morning and evening and poses no risk to pregnant or breastfeeding women.
Aloe vera gel is suitable for all skin types. To reduce the appearance of dark circles or bags, a dab can be applied twice daily around the eyes. Then, massage the area until the treatment is fully absorbed. This action also stimulates blood and lymphatic circulation, and has a draining effect. A reduction in non-hereditary dark circles can generally be observed after 4 weeks.
For enhanced effectiveness, aloe vera gel can be combined withhyaluronic acid.
