Damask Rose Essential Oil

Commonly known as: Rosa Damascena Flower Oil (I.N.C.I.), Damask Rose Essence, Ancient Rose, Bulgarian Rose, Flower of the Prophet Mohammed, Gole Mohammadi.
Botanical name: Rosa × damascena Herrm.
Extraction process: Double distillation through steam distillation (cohobation).
Family: Rosacea.
Part of the plant extracted: Flowers.
Location: Originally from the Middle East (Iran). Today, it is cultivated worldwide, particularly in Iran, Europe, Bulgaria, Morocco, Turkey, and India.
Flowering: From June to September.
Provenance, origin: Bulgaria, Iran, Morocco, Turkey.
Phytochemical composition: Citronellol, phenylethyl alcohol, geraniol, kaempferol, geranyl acetate, farnesol, citral (geranial + neral), limonene, linalool, eugenol, benzyl benzoate, nonadecane, nerol, heneicosane, nonadecene, methyleugenol, heptadecane, heptadecene.
Sensorial properties: Appearance: Liquid; Color: Light Yellow; Scent: Characteristic, with floral notes.
Physical characteristics: Density: 0.848 - 0.880 g/cm3; Refractive Index: 1.452 - 1.470; Insoluble in water; Maximum recommended dilution of 2% in leave-on products.
Benefits: Astringent, toning, antioxidant, antibacterial, firming, revitalizing, regenerating, anti-inflammatory, soothing, fragrant.
Concerns: All skin types, especially tired skin, damaged skin (rosacea, eczema, etc...), skin showing signs of aging (wrinkles, loss of radiance, etc...) and skin prone to redness; All hair types, particularly dull hair; Recommended for reducing stretch marks.

Contraindications, Usage Precautions

Some natural compounds found in Damask rose essential oil can be irritating to the skin.As with most essential oils, it is strictly prohibited for pregnant and breastfeeding women. Damask rose essential oil is also advised against for children under the age of 3 as a precaution.

Note : It is advisable to conduct an initial allergy test of Damask rose essential oil in the crook of the elbow for at least 24 hours before using it to ensure that there is no reaction.

Originating from the Middle East (Iran), the Damask rose is considered an ancient and precious variety of rose that has 30 petals. Indeed, the Damask rose bush is a plant derived from the wild rose Rosa canina. The Damask rose does not tolerate heat and therefore must be cultivated at high altitudes. It appears that the crude distillation of roses to obtain essential oil emerged at the end of the 7th century AD, and spread to the provinces later in the 14th century. Iran was the main producer of rose essential oil until the 16th century and exported it worldwide. For the aromatic essence of the Damask rose essential oil to be at its highest level, the flowers are hand-harvested each year between May and June early in the morning. It takes 4 tons of petals to produce 1 kg of essential oil. Moreover, to best bring out its aromatic essence, the Damask rose must undergo a double distillation. The final essential oil is a clever blend of 1/3 to 1/5 direct essence/indirect essence.
